Electrostatic charging for particle board
Problem
In the wood industry, ply or chip or particle board is laminated on one or both sides with a
layer of a décor substrate to form a glossy/matte-finish top layer. The resultant laminated
board is thus aesthetically and visually appealing.
The décor sheet is positioned on top of the board before it is conveyed to the heat-and-press
section. During this transportation or conveying, it is important to maintain the relative
position of the two layers, to ensure that the end product laminate is properly aligned and
free of wrinkles and/or bubbles.
Solution
Valstat® VC series electrostatic charging electrodes are used to ensure proper bonding (like
a temporary glue) between the two layers once the ​décor ​sheet is positioned on top of the
board. By applying electrostatic charges just before and during conveying, the ​décor​ sheet
bonds well to the board and they remain interlocked till the heat-and-press lamination
process is started without any relative offset or slippage. The end product is a well-formed
laminate.
As can be seen in the above diagram, the Valstat® electrostatic charging system comprises
a set of charging electrodes – one positive and the other negative – each powered by a
Valstat® PC series high voltage (HV) positive and negative HV charging generator.
Installation and commissioning is easy and the system pays for itself by way of improved
productivity and quality, and near-zero rejects.
