Clinching her fists and biting her tongue, Mary tried not to react. The redness on her neck and ears tingled and she felt herself spiraling out of control. Without meaning to, her fingers cracked the pencil in half, causing the teacher to pause in the middle of the spelling test. “Mary, is anything wrong?” the teacher asked blankly. “No, I need a new pencil,” Mary replied through clenched teeth.
