Theodorakis is one of
the most important
contemporary Greek
music composers. At
the same time he has been
a politician , former
government minister, an
MP and an activist
awarded the LENIN
PEACE PRIZE in 1983.
2. The kinds of music
He has worked on all
kinds of music and he has
composed the music for
the film “Zorba the
Greek” whose main
theme exists as a
trademark for Greece. It is
also known as the
“syrtaki dance”
inspired from old Cretan
traditional dances.

His most significant and
influential works are
based on Greek world
poetry –songs composed
by utilizing poetry from
poets like Giorgos
Seferis(Nobel Prize
1963),Pablo
Neruda(Nobel Prize
1971),Odysseas
Elytis(Nobel Prize 1979).

include ”Epitafios”, the
“Ballad of Mauthausen”,
“Mikres
Kyklades”,”Romiossini””
Axion Esti” and “Canto
Generale”.

The Beatles,Shirley
Bassey and Edith Piaf.
He has composed the
scores for many films such
as “Faidra”(1962),
“Zorba the
Greek”(1964),
”Serpico” (1973)
and “Lysistrati”(2002)
