Srivallabha Temple
1. Srivallabha Temple
The temple complex enclosed in a large area in
picturesque surroundings, holds the main sanctum
dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The sanctum sanctorum of
the main shrine houses a six feet tall idol of Maha
Vishnu. The temple is noted for its exquisite carvings.
The temple, built in typical Kerala style architecture,
has fine carvings and murals and the main shrine is
surrounded by ‘Anakottils’ on all four sides.
The main feature of the temple is its 50 feet tall flag
post carved out from a single rock, with a massive idol
of Garuda (the eagle vehicle of Lord Vishnu) on top,
believed to be created by the ‘Perumthachan’, an
ancient legendary master craftsman from Kerala. The
bottom of the flag post is believed to be deep enough
to touch the underground water level. The large tank
enclosed i n a one storied structure near the temple is
believed to be formed naturally from a spring.

2. General Information
• This temple in Kerala is one among the 108 Vaishnava Divya desams. It is 2½
km from Thiruvalla town, which is in the rail route between Ernakulam and
Thiruvananthapuram. In this temple the God is worshipped five times a day
in different forms. In the early morning pooja God is worshipped as
Brahmachari, in the Pandeerati pooja he is worshipped as a sanyasi, at noon
Pooja he is worshipped as Vaasudeva dressed in royal dresses. In the
evening Pooja he is worshipped as Narayana and during night Pooja he is
worshipped as Lakshmi Narayana. While the goddess is dressed in the usual
manner, the God during this Pooja is dressed as a Sanyasi. The custom here
is to continue to keep all material necessary for doing pooja inside the
sanctum sanctorum before closing the door, in the belief that sage Durvasa
would come in the night and do Pooja to the Lord.
Performing Kathakali is one of the main forms of worship to this Lord. It
seems when Vilwamangalathu Swamiyar visited this temple, he found the
Lord watching Kathakali along with the audience. Thereafter, whenever
Kathakali is performed at this temple, they keep a seat covered with silk
with a lamp lit near this divine seat.
