Motley Crue
+ Motorhead
Adelaide Entertainment Centre, Thurs Dec 8
(Snapshots of an evening with Motley
Crue and Motorhead, in the words of
those present.)
"We're Motorhead and we play fucking
rock and roll": Lemmy. To paraphrase
Mitch Hedberg Motorhead play
rock'n'roll in the same way a brick wall
plays tennis. They are relentless.
"This is Mandy. I think I'm in love with
her": pissed bloke in the bar shouting
to his mates. Motley Crue are on stage
in ten minutes, yet most of the arena is
queued to buy a drink. Hopefully his
was a happy ending.
"You wonder if they're so loud to cover
his voice.": My friend makes a very good point. Vince Neil's vocals are
pretty awful. The muddy, bass-heavy noise coming from the stage
almost seems intended to drown the hapless - but earnest - frontman.
"...........": We're barely five songs in and the PA has blown. Despite
everything they throw at us - dwarves, female dancers, extraordinary
10-minute break mid-set and more naked flame than is surely allowed
indoors - watching Motley Crue play in total silence and not realise it is
as surreal as the night gets.
"Can you hear me at the back?": Vince
Neil queries from the darkness. The
power's back on and the resulting roar
is the loudest of the night.
"What's up fuckers?":Tommy Lee. Lee
is the heartbeat of the band in more
ways than just the obvious. He looks
hungry to simply play music. He is so
genuinely having a good time you can't
help but like him.
"Oh shit, he's died": Nikki Sixx
introducing Mick Mars. The guitarist is
lying on stage, and looks comfortable
for the first time all night. Rock's most
infamous hip-replacement patient is a
hunched figure and seems to have
difficulty even walking. For all the posturing, Mick Mars proves he's the
real deal.
"Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou": Tommy Lee. A
bizarre and supremely entertaining evening comes to an end. The best
moments tonight - Kickstart My Heart and Ace Of Spades the obvious
respective highlights - are as good as rock and roll gets. The quotes
end there. The ringing in my ears has started.
