In 2018, WOCAN conducted and facilitated a
series of workshops and trainings in Asia to
build capacities on gender analysis and
integrated planning for ICIMOD, Forum Asia,
the Fojo Media Institute, OXFAM and their
GRAISEA partners (Gender Transformative and
Responsible Agribusiness Investments in South
East Asia), and the South East Asian Fisheries
Development Center. We also conducted
assessments for the Mekong River Commission
in Cambodia,Thailand, Vietnam and Lao PDR
under our continuing support to the Swedish
Embassy/SIDA in Asia/Pacific and for UNREDD
implementing agencies in Cambodia.
We expanded our initiatives to build support
for gender in climate finance, supporting
UNDP in a Regional Dialogue on Climate
Resilient Growth and Development and
facilitating the development of the ASEAN
(Association of South East Asian Nations)
approach on Gender Mainstreaming in the
Food, Agriculture and Forestry Sectors with
support from the Germany Corporation for
International Cooperation (GIZ).

Another highlight was WOCAN’s
first activity in support of the
Green Climate Fund’s gender
policy, to develop a gender
policy and manual for the
Corporación Nacional para el
Desarrollo of Uruguay in
partnership with Price
Waterhouse Coopers

2. The focus was on opportunities to recognize,
support and fund women’s groups and
organizations, and to create bridges between
these organizations and financing opportunities
from gender lens investors, climate financiers
and other private and public sector funders.
During Sweden’s Gender Equality Forum, we
spoke to funders and policy makers about
concrete ways to support women’s
empowerment within climate agendas, and
measure results.
We discussed opportunities with investors at
the nexus of climate and gender with a
session co-hosted with Value for Women,
Acumen and the Global Impact Investing
Network during Climate Week NYC, at the
Global Action Summit in San Francisco in
partnership with the Rockefeller Philanthropy
Advisors and the Climate Policy Initiative, as
well as at the 2018 Sustainable Energy for All in
Lisbon.

We led a panel on Addressing
Gender Inequality to Create Impact
at the Asia Venture Philanthropy
Network conference, with the
Australian Dept. of Foreign Affairs
and Trade (DFAT)

2018 evidenced growing recognition of the W+
Standard as a unique framework to measure and
quantify women’s empowerment across the
SDGs.
W+ projects and W+ units are now listed as
both stand-alone units and as co-labelled
units of VCS on Markit’s Global
Environmental Registry (http://mer.markit.com)
A well-attended webinar, Measuring and
reporting on gender equality and women’s
empowerment for climate and SDGs, featured
speakers from VERRA and climate project
developers/intermediaries South Pole and VNV
Services. This is the first of a series that will
continue in 2019.

3. Highlighted applications of the W+ included two
CSR livelihoods projects of Acwapower in
Morocco and South Africa. Verified results
showed that women increased their income &
assets by 67% and their knowledge and
education by 228%. The W+ units generated by
the project generated are now for sale and will
be stacked onto Renewable Energy Certificates
produced by the company’s solar installation in
Morocco.
We look forward in 2019 to more projects
applying the W+ and more investors,
companies and individuals contributing to
gender equality by buying W+ units.
With greater adoption, W+ could
have broad scaling and expansion
potential internationally and at
home. And just as important, W+
contributes to an urgently needed
global dialogue around recognizing
the critical, and often under-valued
importance of women’s labor.
