Apprenticeships and traineeships are jobs that combine
paid work and structured training.
Although they vary from one industry to another, apprenticeships and traineeships include paid
employment under an appropriate industrial arrangement and nationally recognised training.
The main difference between an apprenticeship and a traineeship is the length of time it takes to
achieve the qualification.
Traineeships generally take between twelve to twenty four months to complete.
Apprenticeships generally last for forty eight months (although apprentices may complete early if
they achieve the skills required before their due finish date).
Apprenticeship and traineeship training can be:
• delivered in both the workplace and/or classroom
• offered to existing workers (workers currently in the workforce)
• offered to school students
• easily linked to further qualifications including university studies.
