World Aluminium Foil Packaging Market
2013-2023
7. Leading Companies in the Aluminium Foil Packaging
Market
7.1 ACM Carcano
ACM Carcano claims to be one of the most important companies in Europe in the field of flexible
packaging with aluminium foil. The main sectors including confectionery, food, pharmaceutical
industries etc. The company is also active in technical applications, in particular cable screening,
insulation and soundproofing, and profiles. The quality of the company’s products is supported by
an in-house manufacture of aluminium foil (aseptic liquid packaging), at the maximum quality and
specification levels, including in relation to dimensions. But it is also the result of a long track
record and deep roots in the territory.
In 1895 the company’s founder, Antonio Carcano, decided to move his business from Maslianico to
Mandello del Lario on the banks of the river Meria, and Carcano has been able to constantly
evolve over the past years. After initial production involving flexible tubes in tin and lead alloy,
Antonio Carcano realised the possibilities for using foil in the field of flexible packaging. In 1947,
the company opened the Delebio plant which was located a few dozen kilometres to the north of
Mandello, at the beginning of the Valtellina area, dedicated to aluminium foil rolling, using self
produced hydroelectric energy as a consequence of a basin and power plant specifically built and
continuously modernized to produce more than 10 million kwh per year.
At Delebio, rolling mills and auxiliary systems have become larger, faster, and more sophisticated,
and the converting lines at Mandello were enhanced with modern machines for printing, colouring
and other processes. There is a production chain that starts from ingots to obtain converted foil,
and this is based on two production units located close to each other. The company claims that this
goes against the trend of what other manufacturers have always implemented through breaking
down the various phases into completely separate production units or even different companies.
The Delebio plant was the second plant in the world to install a rolling mill for thin foil in a finished
width of over two metres, which the company claims was the first in the world to carry out the entire
foil production cycle in these dimensions starting from slab casting. The company claims that
Delebio has a leading position in the production of high quality foil on a world scale, and that the
same is true for Mandello in the field of converted foil. The company has more than 500
employees, and 34,000 tonnes per year of aluminium foil produced, of which more than 10,000 is
entirely converted.
