Greek mythology involves many gods and goddesses that were believed to control natural forces and human activities in Greek society. Some of the most important gods included Zeus, the king of the gods who ruled over the sky and weather; Poseidon, god of the sea; and Hades, god of the underworld. Other significant gods and goddesses were Athena, Apollo, Aphrodite, Artemis, and Hermes.
