The World Trade Organization (WTO) was established to oversee global trade agreements and rules between member countries. As the successor to GATT, the WTO promotes free trade to reduce costs and increase economic growth worldwide. India is one of the founding members of the WTO and has played an important role in shaping major trade policies. India's increasing participation in international trade is believed to lead to greater prosperity globally. The WTO helps resolve trade disputes between countries like India and its trading partners. India has also pushed for multilateral trade deals within the WTO framework to liberalize trade and strengthen the trading system.
