Overview: Course Contents
Overview: Chicago State University’s
Communication, Media Arts, and Theatre
(CMAT) Department has a wealth of talented
and well-known professors within our grasp.
This is more than reflected within WCSU
radio, with award-winning V103’s very own
deejays Herb Kent and Troi Tyler serving as
General and Station Manager; the training is
impeccable. Students flourish when given
the opportunity to showcase their skills via
internship, graduate school, and/or gainful
employment.
Course contents
Overview: To further produce multifaceted media
students, Chicago State University is introducing
Practicum in Media. This course is designed to
introduce and educate our community on the art of
listening, writing, and producing public-affairs style
radio. We’re not only dominating commercial style
college radio, but will have the ability to finesse any
style of story that will have listeners cemented to
their modern day devices.
Course goals
• Our students will need the following tools to create this
body of knowledge:
• Textbook: Sound Reporting: The NPR Guide to Audio
Journalism and Production by: Jonathan Kern
• Internet, audio software (ex. Abode Audition) audio
recorder
• Flash drive
• Notebook
• Pen / pencil
Course Goals: How Do We Succeed?
The classroom is our
newsroom. Each class
meets to read, listen,
discuss and question
campus, national and
international issues.
This is how we learn
and digest what to
report on.
Our classroom consist of listening to and dissecting
stories (short and long form) that can challenge your
intellect as well as place a fire of change in any media
student’s journalistic spirit. We also have a rubric that
is used to determine whether or not we have written,
reported, edited, and produced pieces that meet or
exceed journalistic expectations.
Course Goals: How Do We Succeed?
Initially, segments will
remain campus bound.
Meaning, students are
interviewing several
different departments
and further discover
what makes our school
so wonderfully unique.
.Perhaps students uncover :
• How do we get healthier and diverse menus in
the cafeteria?
• Who and why are we honoring the chosen few
at the annual Angel’s Gala dinner?
• The Athletic Department has been awarded $2
million. How are they going to use the funding?
Course Goals: Building On Our Success
Upon successful
completion of several
polished segments,
students will then
venture out and find
stories that affect our
society bringing forth
solid reporting and
passion in the
information they present
in the newsroom.
Students may want to explore:
• The proper way to respond when getting pulled
over by the police.
• The latest fashion designer making local waves.
• A free clinic that caters to pregnant substance
abusers.
• The LGBT community AIDS walk.
Course Goals: You Are On the Air
Our stories will air
during various time
slots on several shows
that promote music,
news, fine arts and of
course, public affairs
during a 24 hour
period.
Let’s Get Ready To Enroll!
Fortunately, the relationship
between iHeart radio and
WCSU further solidifies the
powerful network and
relationship that further
embrace investing in the whole
student at Chicago State
University.
This course will inject the idea
that our global society demands
accurate, vivid, engaging
information at informs,
entertains, and educates. We
will make strides as additional
muscle that keeps WCSU
MOVING ON THE MAP!
