Friends University was founded in 1898. Friends University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association, 1-312-263-0456,
www.ncahigherlearningcommission.org. Friends University offers the associate, bachelor and master degrees.
Unit of Credit: The unit of credit is the semester hour. Each semester hour represents the equivalent of one class period of fifty (50) minutes in length (or two lab hours) for 15 weeks. The University offers courses in
a variety of formats while maintaining the cited equivalency.
Term Definitions:
 Prior to September 1, 1968: A semester calendar (18 week semesters) with a 9-week summer school was used. Credits were recorded in semester hours, each hour the equivalent of one class meeting per
week. Class periods were 50 minutes long.
 September 1, 1968 – August 31, 1975: Friends University was on the quarter calendar. Each quarter was approximately 12 weeks in length, with the normal student load being approximately 16 quarter hours.
Class periods were 50 minutes long. A one quarter hour course would be equivalent to 2 / 3 semester hours of credit.
 September 1, 1975 to January 1994: a 15-2-15 calendar was adopted: Two semesters with a two-week January Term plus summer school.
 January 1994 to Present: Two semesters and summer sessions. Abbreviations for Sessions: SP—Spring Semester, SU—Summer, FA—Fall Semester
 Prior Abbreviations for Term Sessions: SP—Spring Semester, SU—Summer, FA—Fall Semester
Non-Term Programs: Friends University offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs that may begin at any time during the year. Courses are sequential with at least 3-4 terms of continuous enrollment.
Explanation of Course Numbers and Grades
Course Levels: Prior to 1925 courses were not divided into upper and lower divisions.
Undergraduate Colleges
Time Periods Course Numbers Course Level Categories
Prior to September 1, 1968 1 – 49 Lower Division – Freshmen and Sophomore Level
50 – XX Upper Division – Junior and Senior Level
September 1, 1968 to Present 0* - 099 Remedial Courses
100 – 299 Freshmen and Sophomore Level
300 Experimental Courses not listed in Catalog
301 – 499 Junior and Senior Level
*Many courses offered during January term were unlisted in the
Catalog and were assigned a number in the order appearance in the
class schedule. Many January Term courses carry numbers below
100.
The Graduate School
500 – XXX Graduate Level
Graduate Workshop Credit:
Friends University also offers education and other graduate level workshops for graduate credit on and off campus. The numbering system in some education cases reflects the numbering system created by the
sponsoring school district. Thus not all education graduate level classes carry numbers above 500.

calculation and the original course grade is removed from the GPA calculation.
After July 1, 2007: I – Include & E – Exclude: Repeated courses are designated on the Friends transcript as follows: Repeated courses included in GPA and credit hours earned calculations will have the letter ‗I‘ in
the far left column (indicating ‗included‘). Courses repeated and not included in the GPA calculation or credit hours earned will have the letter ‗E‘ in the far left column (indicating ‗excluded‘). Friends University includes
the most recent grade in the calculations, whether or not improvement was shown. Withdrawals (grades of WD or WF) do not constitute a repeat.
*** After July 1, 2007: Transferred coursework and grades marked with a TH are counted in attempted hours, GPA hours, and quality points. They do not count in earned hours. They are included in the GPA
calculation. Prior to July 1, 2007, transfer grades were designated by credit type only, but were included in the same calculations.
GPA/Grade Point Average: Determined by dividing the total number of quality points by the total number of GPA hours.
Requirements for Associate Degree: Requires a minimum of 62 semester hours with GPA of 2.00.
Requirements for Baccalaureate Degree: Requires a minimum of 124 semester hours with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00.
Requirements for Master’s Degree: Program requirements vary, but a minimum of 30 semester hours is required with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
Transfer Work:
From January 15, 1983 to August 27, 1994: Friends University ceased to accept ―D‖ and ―F‖ transfer work from other schools. Exceptions were granted for up to 8 hours of ―D‖ to be transferred. Students enrolled at
that time were also permitted the option of deleting ―D‖ and ―F‖ transfer work. Also, readmitted students whose college work at Friends University had been interrupted for a minimum of three years had the option to
delete all or part of their previous record with grades below ―C‖.
From August 1994 to Present: Transfer work posted to the student record from regionally accredited institutions is calculated in the cumulative GPA. GPA calculation may include course work posted but not used to
meet graduation requirements. External credit such as credit by exam; portfolio; CLEP; AP etc. is shown as transfer work granted by Friends University. This coursework may not be delineated but show on an official
transcript as a lump credit hour sum.
Official Transcripts: Each transcript request will contain ALL work earned at Friends University with Undergraduate and Graduate credits printed as separate pages.
