Position: General Manager
Head of a 5-member team hired to rescue the non-profit hospital, the largest
private hospital in Athens, from imminent closure due to years of
mismanagement leading to its fiscal insolvency. Managed to sustain hospital
operations and implement a sound and feasible business plan just prior to the
financial crises in Greece and Cyprus. The situation became hopeless as a
standalone business entity and the Board pursued the possibility of selling the
facility.

Accomplishment & Achievements
• Transformed Hygeia Hospital from a loss position in 2005, into a profit
position in 2006, and becoming the Greek market and Regional leader in 2009
with revenues of over 300€ million and EBIDTA of nearly 20%.
• Managed rapid and successful corporate expansion, from 1 hospital in 2006 to
9 hospitals in Greece, Cyprus, and Turkey through M & A and 1 green field
project in Albania.
• Organized the Hygeia Group as a functional entity, quickly becoming the
epicenter for corporate strategy and decision-making.
• Directed the creation of group purchasing and pharmaceutical wholesaling
companies to serve the needs of the Group’s international hospital network, as
well as, other hospital clients.
• Directed change management transforming a family-run business into a
corporate culture by the complete reorganization of the executive
management structure in all hospitals by recruiting the best hospital
management talent available in Greece.
• Directed the implementation of a Group-wide hospital information system,

Company: Athens Medical Group S. A. – Athens, Greece
Position: Group Managing Director
As a senior corporate executive of the largest private hospital corporation in
Southeastern Europe, was responsible for all operational and managerial aspects
of the Group’s domestic and international interests. Domestically, the Group
owned and operated 8 hospitals, with over 2,500 Employees and 2,800
cooperating physicians. The Group’s international presence included a clinic in
Moscow, major diagnostic centers in Prague, Plovdiv, and Bucharest, as well as,
representation offices in Sofia, Belgrade, Tirana, and Skopje. Specific areas of
expertise included corporate strategic planning, fiscal planning, integrated health
care systems management, health care executive development and training,
physician recruitment and retention, patient relations, quality management
systems, group purchasing policies, internal auditing, operations performance
appraisal, human resource management, business development and marketing,
and health insurance products.
1997 – 1999
Company: Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center – Athens, Greece
Position: General Manager
Was the senior executive responsible for the day-to-day management and
operation of this pioneering and internationally acclaimed heart center,
specializing in cardiac surgery and invasive cardiology. Conceived and
implemented a reorganization strategy resulting improved efficiency and cost
reduction. These improvements led to a 15% increase in adult and pediatric
cardiac surgery (including heart, lung, and heart-lung transplantations)
productivity and 30% increase in invasive cardiology procedures performed.
Peripheral benefits derived from the re-organization included precise a cost
accounting system, introduction of clinical pathways, and implementation of a
modern employee appraisal system. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors,
was also responsible for managing fiscal and policy issues as they related to the
Department of Health and the Alexander S. Onassis Charity Foundation.
1996
Company: Interamerican Insurance Company S.A. - Athens, Greece
Position: Managing Director – Health Systems Division
Responsible for designing and implementing an integrated health care system for
the largest private insurance company in Greece. Based the western-style
managed care and health maintenance organization models, the system was
conceptualized to serve the company’s 250,000+ insured by developing a
comprehensive company-owned network of hospitals and diagnostic centers,
supported by an affiliated physician network. The project proceeded successfully
through the design phase, but a radical change in the corporate strategic plan
resulted in not following through with complete implementation.

4. 1992-1995
Company: Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center – Athens, Greece
Position: Administrative Director
As the senior Administrator, was responsible for all administrative and financial
activities leading to the opening and operation of the most modern cardiac
surgery and cardiology center in the region. Accomplishments included the
complete outfitting of the center, recruitment and hiring of administrative,
technical, and clinical staff, development of initial operating procedures and
training programs, negotiated contracts with private insurance companies and
public health insurance carriers, and directed the installation of comprehensive
hospital information system.
1983-1991
Company: American Medical International, Inc. - (Hygeia Hospital)
Positions: Chief Financial Officer (1983-1985)
Managing Director (1985-1991)
As CFO, departments reporting to him included General and Patient Accounting,
Admissions Office, Materials Management and Information Systems. Of
particular significance was the revision of the accounting system and a major
computer system upgrade making Hygeia the 1st
in Greece to implement a
hospital-wide patient charge system. Upon becoming the majority shareholder,
AMI appointed him as Executive Director and legal representative in Greece.
During this time he was challenged by a hostile take-over bid and masterminded
the strategy that resulted in the company successfully retaining its majority
position. Upon sale of the hospital to a Greek company was promoted to
Managing Director and was responsible for all aspects of operations. Due to his
personal conflict with the management style of the new owner and the radical
departure from the AMI culture, he elected to resign.
