Patients understandably value their privacy, but
how does the health information privacy rule
(HIPAA) undermine communication – particularly
communication between professionals and family
caregivers – and how can we improve the exchange
of information without compromising a patient’s
right to privacy?
• An electronic record of who the
  patient authorized to obtain
  health information would be
  important.
• This authorization can be
obtained at the outset, but the
  patient should have the ability
  to update this authorization as
needed, or have the option to
update it on a yearly basis.
