The 126 New West
rail-yard workers who
have been locked out
of their jobs since
January have been
“vindicated” by a
precedent-setting
Labour Relations
Board decision, says
their union leader.
Bill Magri,
president Canadian
Union of Public
Employees (CUPE)
local 7000, announced
this week the B.C.
Labour Relations
Board ruled Southern
Railway of British
Columbia (SRY)
had unlawfully used
replacement workers
when they used A&B
Rail to replace switch
ties on Annacis
Island. In addition to
the freight transporter
being ordered to
cease and desist using
private contractors to
do union work, they
were also ordered to
pay CUPE $5,000 in
damages.
“It would be better
for all of us – for the
railway, the workers,
the customers and the
public – if Southern
would spend more
time at the bargaining
table and less at the
Labour Board,” Magri
said in an issued
statement.
New West ready to examine
Canada Game, Centennial
Community Centre redevelopment

The first step to developing a game plan for the
Canada Games Pool (CGP) has been taken by
city council.
Transparency, accountability and evaluation
could be what guides council in its desire to
eventually rehabilitate the aging pool complex
and its next-door neighbor, the Centennial
Community Centre (CCC).
A report issued Monday outlined 16 guiding
principles staff recommended council consider
when making decisions about the redevelopment
undertaking.
“Once adopted, the principles will provide
the foundation to guide the overall project,” the
report stated.
It also specified adopting the guiding principles
early on would be particularly valuable as
they would serve as the “parameters against
which decision points could be evaluated and
performance assessed.”
Mayor Jonathan Coté adamantly agreed the
“principle-based process” would be extremely
helpful for determining major project decisions
over the next year that would most likely be
followed by four years of project work.
“Setting the principles up front serves as a
better guide to the process down the road,” he
said.
Both several decades old, the CGP and
CCC have been a topic of conversation for
several years. In 2010, a study on the two aging
structures concluded the city consider three
restoration options to address the significant
structural issues including the need for seismic
standard upgrades.
