The police bill for battling the UK riots in August 2011 was revealed to be £124 million. BRITAIN'S top cop yesterday branded the riots a "wake-
up call" for the soft-touch justice system — as the cost to
police hit £124million.
Acting Met Commissioner Tim Godwin said criminals must face
proper punishment and praised the swift justice meted out in
recent weeks.
He said the fact three-quarters of those arrested in the riots
already had a criminal record raised serious questions for cops.
Earlier Justice Secretary Ken Clarke said a "broken" prison
system had failed to stop reoffending by a "feral underclass". Mr
Godwin admitted to a Commons committee he should have put
more cops on the streets sooner.
Meanwhile it emerged the violence had cost police £74million in

Mr Godwin admitted the "thin blue line is quite thin on occasions".
London Mayor Boris Johnson also told the home affairs select
committee he was trying to get more cops on the streets. One
idea would see officers on long-term sick leave filling office jobs,
