Editor's Notes

  1. I am shafaq mahmood from rmc and the theme of my presention is to STEP UP PREVENTION FOR DIABETES MELLITUS
  2. Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when either the pancreas doesnot produce enough insulin.. That is Type I diabetes.. Or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin..that is type 2 diabetes. Both leading to high blood sugar levels. Unfortunately type 1 diabetes is not preventable. But the good news is that type 2 diabetes that accounts for 90% of the total diabetic cases is largely preventable
  3. In Pakistan… 38 million people fall in the submerged portion of the diabetes iceberg. That means these 38 million prediabetics are the target population for diabetes prevention.
  4. Now, before moving on to various preventive measures that can be taken, I would like to emphasize much more on WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO PREVENT DIABETES?
  5. Lets go through some facts quickly. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) reports that there are more than 387 million people living with diabetes worldwide. And 90% of these are suffering from type 2 diabetes. Despite all the treatment being done, the disease itself is so dangerous and so progressive.. No 1 cause of end stage renal failure, no 1 cause of blindness, no 1 cause of surgical amputations. Leading to an estimated 3.4 million deaths each year..and the deaths will double by the year 2030. Now coming to Pakistan, we are the 7th largest country in terms of diabetes population and will be the 4th largest by the year 2030.
  6. An epidemic of a disease that is largely preventable ! This without any doubt is a humiliation to public health !
  7. And The fact that type 2 diabetes, which is a largely preventable disorder has now reached an epidemic proportion is without any doubt a public health humiliation!!!
  8. And the story does not end here.. 50 million, 100 million,, 200 million… No … acc to IDF …Its just like not getting the oil changed in your car and then spending money on a new engine…why not spend that money on educating people with the same information that im going to reveal here !
  9. Remember… there is no treatment for diabetes ! Once you have it.. You have it forever.. The medicines can only control the symptoms.. Once you stop taking your meds you would probably end up crashing into the emergency dept of a hospital.
  10. We did not known until this landmark study was published. In this study reduction in the incidence of type 2 diabetes in prediabetic people was studied in two groups. One who did lifestyle interventions and other were given a leading anti diabetic drug.. METOFORMIN.
  11. And the result were shocking.. Fewer people in the drug group developed diabetes as compared to placebo BUT diet and exercise worked BETTER ALONE !
  12. And also had no side effects !
  13. Other studies subsequently found the same result.
  14. One of the most famous diabetes prevention study.. What they did..
  15. They counseled a large no of people to achieve these 5 goals.. i.e reduce weight and fat intake, increase fiber intake and do regular exercise.
  16. What they found !! The people who were able to achieve either 4 or five goals .. NONE OF THEM DEVELOPED DIABETES… A 100% DROP IN RISK! What else do you need? Is it that difficult ? Believe me .. Its not a rocket science.
  17. So putting all in a nut shell.. What you need to do ? Very simple
