This document defines and describes different types of computer networks:
- LAN (Local Area Network) connects computers within a limited area like a school or office building.
- WAN (Wide Area Network) connects LANs across a large geographic area.
- MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) interconnects users and resources within a metropolitan region.
It also explains the functions of servers, firewalls, routers, and modems in computer networks. Servers provide shared resources and processing power, firewalls check incoming data for safety, routers send internet access to devices, and modems provide the connection to the internet.
3. LAN- A local area network is a
computer network that
interconnects computers within a
limited area such as a residence,
school, laboratory, university
campus or office building
WAN- The wide area network.
WAN is a wide area network that
covers a large geographic area
consisting of two or more LANs.
MAN- A metropolitan area network
is a computer network that
interconnects users with computer
resources in a geographic region
of the size of a metropolitan area.
4. What is server
A server is a computer program or
device that provides a service to
another computer program and its
user, also known as the client. In a
data center, the physical computer that
a server program runs on is also
frequently referred to as a server.
Importance of server- A Server enables
staff to share resources and equipment
such as Internet access, printers, and
fax machines. A Server allows you to
provide high-speed internet access
across a network. A Server gives you
more processing power.
5. What is firewall
Firewall is the network security
system where any information
coming from the internet it check
weather the information or data is
safe for the device or not if it is
harmful for the device so it’s
block information or data.
6. Router- A router is a device
that provides Wi-Fi and is typically
connected to a modem. It sends
information from the internet to
personal devices like computers,
phones, and tablets. These internet-
connected devices in your home
make up your Local Area Network
(LAN).
Modem- The sole purpose of the
modem is to provide you with internet
access. If you were to only have one
internet-connected device with an
Ethernet port (such as a desktop
computer), you could connect the
modem directly to your computer with
no need for a router.
