1. TO WHOMSOEVER IT MAY CONCERN
This is to certify that the Mr. Sankarshan Verma worked with our group here at Department
of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Bombay for his summer research internship program. Mr.
Sankarshan worked in the field of bio-heat transfer wherein he numerically simulated the
phenomena of light propagation through biological tissue phantoms using the commercial
CFD software FLUENT. The analysis of light propagation was based on Beer Lambert’s law.
The resultant intensity distribution in the phantom domain was coupled with an appropriate
heat conduction model for determining the temperature distribution within the body of the
phantom. Towards the final stages of the internship program, Sankarshan also worked on the
development of tissue phantoms for possible experimental work and got them fabricated. The
work holds its importance in the context of photo-thermal therapy.
In my assessment, Sankarshan showed considerable sincerity, dedication and
motivation level towards his internship work and during this limited period of close to one
and a half months, he could develop a decent understanding of the problem along with
producing Fluent-based numerical results. I would rate his performance during the internship
program as excellent and I am sure this project and his experience here with our group has
motivated him to pursue this work as part of his future research plans as well.
I wish him every success in future research and academic programs.
