1. Proverbs 10:12 says, “Hatred stirs up quarrels, but love makes up for all
offences.” (Holy Bible, NLT). In this passage the virtue identified is love, which can be
defined as an enduring and powerful feeling of deep affection for someone or something.
This will help me flourish as a human being when put into practice because it will make
me more like Christ. It is reminder that godly love covers a multitude of things. With
nursing this it will be essential to respond to all circumstances with love. Quarrels will
come upon a unit in a hospital quickly, and it will be vital that I meet those with love in
order to tear down the quarrels instead of building them up.
2. Proverbs 16:22 says, “Discretion is a life-giving fountain to those who possess
it, but discipline is wasted on fools” (Holy Bible, NLT). The virtue to be identified in this
passage is discretion. Discretion is having the ability to know when to hold ones tongue,
and how to best behave in different circumstances. Having discretion will aid in soothing
many of life’s difficult dilemmas. Discretion well help me to flourish as a human because
it will aid me in becoming a woman of worth and stability. Like this passage says it will
prove to be “a life-giving fountain”. In nursing, this virtue could easily help me save a
persons life and aid me in successful nursing care. One example is having discretion on
what to say to family members of ill patients at certain times will prove to be of great
worth.
3. In Proverbs 31:8 it states, “Speak up for those who can not speak for
themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.” (Holy Bible, NLT). The virtue that is
addressed here is justice. Justice is a desire for moral rightness, having a concern and

deep respect for people. This virtue will help me live successfully by putting other
peoples lives in the forefront of my life. Striving for justice in people’s lives will cause
me live a life of purpose and a life that affects others. This virtue should serve as a pillar
in all nurses’ lives and careers. We are called to take care of people who cannot take of
themselves, thus, striving for justice in their lives. Having justice as a virtue that is
portrayed in our practice will greatly increase the quality of our patient care and bedside
manner, ultimately facilitating a healing environment.
4. “She is clothed in strength and dignity, she laughs without fear of the future.
When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.” Proverbs
31:25-26 (Holy Bible, NLT). While there are a few virtues portrayed in this passage the
one that will be addressed is kindness. Kindness is the quality of being genuinely caring,
thoughtful, and warm-hearted. Possessing kindness and portraying it will help me
flourish because I will ooze compassion and be an enjoyable human being to be around.
This will not only draw other kind humans to myself but help me to show it to others.
Kindness is good medicine for the soul. As a nurse showing kindness to patients and co-
workers during an ordinary day can make the difference between a successful day and the
worst day of someone’s life. As nurses we will be instructing 90% of the time we are
working so do this remembering to show kindness will greatly aid us in our success as
nurses.
