Deliverable 4 - Hypothesis Tests
Competency
Given a real-life application, develop a hypothesis test for a population parameter and its interpretation.
Instructions
Scenario (information repeated for deliverable 01, 03, and 04)
A major client of your company is interested in the salary distributions of jobs in the state of Minnesota that range from $30,000 to $200,000 per year. As a Business Analyst, your boss asks you to research and analyze the salary distributions. You are given a spreadsheet
that contains the following information:
· A listing of the jobs by title
· The salary (in dollars) for each job
In prior engagements, you have already explained to your client about the basic statistics and discussed the importance of constructing confidence intervals for the population mean. Your client says that he remembers a little bit about hypothesis testing, but he is a little fuzzy. He asks you to give him the full explanation of all steps in a hypothesis testing and wants your conclusion about a claim that the average salary for all jobs in the state of Minnesota is less than $74,500 and a second claim that the average salary for all jobs in the state of Minnesota is greater than $70,500.
Background information on the Data
The data set in the spreadsheet consists of 364 records that you will be analyzing from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The data set contains a listing of several jobs titles with yearly salaries ranging from approximately $30,000 to $200,000 for the state of Minnesota.
What to Submit
Your boss wants you to submit the spreadsheet with the completed calculations, answers, and analysis.

Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.

How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

6. Insights
• 1 out of every 200 new jobs created will be in the environmental industry. 3 out of every 4 job
openings in the environmental industry will require a degree. 2 out of 4 will require a B.S. degree.
• Of the 30,000 environmental jobs that we will lose, 80% of them are traditional- agriculture-related
• Salaries only increase 4% with an Associate’s degree. Conversely, salaries increase 50% by staying in
school the extra two years to obtain a Bachelor’s.
• Associates degree or lower = 1 in 3 chance of making less than US median household income
• Bachelors degree or greater = 97% chance of making more than US median household income
• Job seekers distribution should match that of the job opening by degree distribution to achieve full
employment

Editor's Notes
Before I start, I want to review how I obtained this data.
I started by extracting readily available 2014-24 job projection data from the BLS. Next, I created a dictionary containing more than 30 keywords relevant to the environmental industry.
After that, I filtered the BLS data based on these keywords to retrieve environmental occupations only. The BLS data came ready-made with job growth, decline, degree required, and median salary, so that was very helpful.
Lets begin by looking at a summary of the BLS data.
Almost 10 million jobs – that is how much the US economy is expected to add to the labor market. Of these 10 million, 25,000 jobs, on net, will be added to the environmental sector.
So right off the bat, we should be cognizant of what we are dealing with. The environmental labor market is extremely lean, which increases focus on making the right choices for students.
Next, lets look at the landscape of the environmental industry of tomorrow by exploring job demand by the specific 35 occupations.
This chart shows the change in # jobs by each occupation between 2014 and 2024.
Of the jobs with the most growth, the top 5 account for more than 2/3 of this growth. The top 4 account for 50%.
Of the jobs with the most decline, farmers and ranchers account for more than half of the decline
Of the jobs with the most decline, farmers and ranchers account for more than half of the decline
Next, lets investigate demand by degree required
This chart shows the growth and decline for all jobs by the degree they require. Additionally, I have also added the median 2016 salary based on the jobs that require each respective degree.
Again, the story is the same here -
Occupations that only require a HS diploma are expected to decline the most.
Occupations that require a bachelors degree are expected to grow the most.
Occupations that require a HS diploma are the only ones that see more jobs lost relative to jobs gained.
There is relatively no loss of jobs for jobs that require a BS or doctoral or pro degree.
Main takeaway - your chances go up dramatically if you have a degree. 85% of the growth in this space is in jobs that require some kind of degree.
So we looked at gains and losses by degree and occupation, now lets just focus in on job gains/openings in the period and explore what that looks like in relation to each other when compared by degree
This is a pie chart that maps the distribution of job openings by the degree required. This chart is really dense with information. - Once again it’s a similar story.
- BS degree jobs take up more than half of the pie. That means that for every 2 kids in the classroom, one of them needs to get a degree to meet this demand. If both decide not to, supply will exceed demand and will actually drive down the salary for those HS jobs, which doesn’t have a large qty to begin with. Lets assume the other side of the coin too right, if both decide to get BS degrees, and we end up with a situation with an overpopulation of people with bachelors degrees, that’s still favorable as one of them will still most likely end up with a job, albeit in a specialization that he/she may be slightly overqualified for. This is better than the alternative in which you have one of the 2 students that might end up with no job or job in an occupation that isn’t close to what he/she wants.
- Conversely, although HS jobs see the most amount of job cuts, they are still represented well here. The story to tell is that there are definitely going to be HS jobs out there for students, however the expectations need to be calibrated with what these jobs provide. Incomes that aren’t high and jobs that may be in declining specialties.
- The big takeaway is that the students who arent interested in college don’t need to be zero but rather the minority.
