The Tabubil Hospital in Papua New Guinea had scaled down operations during a period of dry weather and mine closure, laying off staff, but has now reopened additional services with reduced beds and staff; during the closure the hospital continued providing care and was praised for its cleanliness, and it faces challenges with the sterilizer being out of service.

OTML thanks Hospital for working through
the dry weather period.
A small ceremony to mark the end of Scale Down Opera-
tion (SDO) and dedication of the full scale operation was
held on Friday, 29th
of April at the hospital’s training
room.
All hospital employees were present to witness the occa-
sion.
Tabubil Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Pastor Timothy
Yapau made the opening and dedication prayer.
Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) Deputy Chief Executive
Officer and General Manager Employee and External Re-
lation Musje Werror, was also present at the occasion.
Mr Werror reiterated the reasons why OTML has had to
make changes to its business and as a result this has also
affected the level of funding to the Hospital.
He commended Margareth Samei for showing strong lead-
ership, effective management and boldness in decision dur-
ing the stand down operations.
“A big achievement for the hospital is that, during the scale
down period, the mining operation was shut down but the
hospital staff were still attending to patients, which re-
flects the commitment you have to serve our community”
said Mr Werror.
He challenged the management and the staff to do their
best to continue providing the same level of safe and qual-
ity service even with the reduced staffing levels and budg-
et.

Tabubil hospital has returned to normal operations since
the SDO in August last year.
On Monday 2nd
of May sections of the hospital which
were closed during SDO were reopened but the number of
inpatient beds have been reduced from 44 to 30.
Last year the hospital provided a full range of services,
employing a total of 131 staff.
On 24th
August 2015, the hospital scaled down and many
sections of the hospital were closed due to the dry weather
and the temporary closure of OTML operations.
Forty three (43) hospital employees were also made redun-
dant as a cost saving measure.
Hospital employees were recalled back to work in line
with OTML restarting operations in March this year
As a result of the reduced hospital budget the hospital ser-
vices were restructured according to the approved budget.
The number of staff is now at 88 but all staff remain com-
mitted to providing the same level of services as provided
in the past.

Medical hospital sterilizer is an important unit or machine used
in hospitals to make objects and instruments clean and free from
bacteria.
The machine is used to sterilize instruments and medical items
for operations, dressings and other medical procedures.
Using an unsterilized instrument for medical procedures is un-
healthy and can cause harmful infections.
Tabubil Hospital sterilizer has been providing effective steriliza-
tion service for more than 10 years making things more conven-
ient and safer for medical workers to carry out their medical pro-
cedures.
However, due to internal mechanical problem it ceased normal
operations as of the 11th of April 2016.
At that time, Kiunga hospital sterilizer which normally provide
the sterilization back up for Tabubil hospital was not working
too.
To maintain continuous hospital services at Tabubil, OTML as-
sisted with logistics and transported instruments and stocks
weighing 100 kg, packed in 3 large containers and flown to Port
Moresby for appropriate sterilization.
Attempts to fix the machine at Tabubil by technicians were un-
successful.
However, Kiunga hospital sterilizer was fixed and now provides
back up for Tabubil hospital.
The spare parts for Tabubil Hospital sterilizer was ordered and
will arrive on site, soon.
“The problem with the sterilizer has added more cost on
the hospital. I hope the new parts would fix the problem,” said
Tabubil Hospital Administrator, Margareth Samei.
Ms. Samei said a portable mini sterilizer is used as back-up
while waiting for the sterilizer to be replaced.
Maternal and Child Health (MCH) clinic started off its full operation on the 2nd
of May, after the last 36 weeks of scale down peri-
od. A total of twenty four (24) kids have been seen for the first time. Other activities for the clinic also commence effectively. The
table indicates the program for the scheduled activities..
