Target of Building 300,000
New Homes a Year
Proposals include the following:
• Reforming planning legislation to
help meet UK housing needs
• Improving the safety of high-rise
buildings
• Appointing a New Homes
Ombudsman to adjudicate on any
disputes between homebuyers
and developers
• Creating a lasting legacy from the
Commonwealth Games which
are set to take place in the UK in
2022
Ministers hope that by implementing a
number of measures the government can
meet the growing need for safe, affordable
housing up and down the country.
The government plans to
put legislation in place to
protect homebuyer rights.
They aim to speed up the
planning process as well as
utilise vacant buildings and
make better use of land to
meet community housing
needs.
In the wake of the Grenfell
Tower tragedy, the UK
government pledged
that it would establish a
comprehensive building
safetyprogramme,including
independent audits of
building regulations and
fire safety. In 2018, the
British government banned
developers from using
combustible materials in
the external walls of tower
blocks.
