NEW FINDINGS ON THE HEALTH IMPACT OF 9/11 TO BE PRESENTED
OCTOBER 13 AT CONFERENCE CO-SPONSORED BY QUEENS COLLEGE
—Topics Will Include Mortality Among 9/11 Survivors; Multiple Illnesses, Including Cancer,
in Rescue and Recovery Workers; and the Physical and Emotional Impact on the Children of 9/11—
WHAT: A scientific conference to present findings from the past year about the health effects
on survivors of the 9-11 disaster and on rescue/recovery workers afterwards. The effects on
the respiratory health of children in the surrounding area and the emotional well-being of
survivors’ and rescue workers’ children will also be addressed.
Presentations will include Mortality Among Survivors of the 9/11 WTC Disaster;
Persistence of Multiple Illnesses in WTC Rescue and Recovery Workers; Early
Assessment of Cancer Outcomes in NYC Firefighters after the 9/11 Attacks; How
Parental Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD) Increase the Risk of PTSD in
Adolescents; and Asthma and Allergy Among Children in an Elementary School near
the WTC. Findings on related pulmonary, mental health and respiratory disorders and
cardiovascular disease will also be explored.

WHO: Steven Markowitz, M.D., Director of the Queens College Center for the Biology of
Natural Systems (CBNS), is the lead organizer of the conference. Dr. Markowitz, who
specializes in occupational and environmental medicine, will open the conference with an
overview of the research. Currently, CBNS co-sponsors the World Trade Center
Health Program Queens Clinical Center of Excellence together with North Shore-
Long Island Jewish Medical Center.
Conference co-sponsors are the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, the Fire Department of
New York, the Health and Hospitals Corporation of Bellevue and the NYC Department of
Health and Mental Hygiene.
Background: CBNS is an environmental and occupational health research institute at
Queens College whose mission is to identify and help rectify environmental and
occupational threats to human health. The WTC Health Program with North Shore – LI

Jewish Medical Center serves over 2,500 people who worked at the site, providing health
monitoring and treatment for related health conditions. The program, which began July 1,
2011 and is funded by the Centers for Disease Control, is staffed by occupational medicine
physicians, nurses, social workers and trained interviewers with nearly a decade of
experience in caring for World Trade Center workers.
