4. As you know, a new Hijri year is coming, it is the year 1438. You also
know that fasting on the ninth & tenth of Month Muharram is clearly
mentioned in the Sunnah (deeds & sayings of the Prophet) of the Apostle of
Allah .
The BEST FASTING after Ramadan is AL-MUHARRAM. The
importance and priority of fasting these days was directly stated in the
Hadeeth (tradition) of the Prophet – peace be upon Him. You will,
Insha Allah, listen to a reminder on this important subject on the Friday
speech preceding to the 9th
and 10th
of Muharram (They will be on 10
and 11 October 2016).
Please find below are the sound traditions (Hadeeth) on the subject.
HADEETH
Hadith No. 1982 - Narrated by Abu Hurairah ٌََُْع ُ هاَّلل َي ِضَر
Allah’s Apostle said: "The best fasting after Ramadan is Al-
Muharram, the month of Allah and the best prayer after the obligatory
(prayer) is late-night prayer.”(Sahih Muslim)
Hadith No. 1824 - Narrated by Ar Rubayyia' bint Muawadh بٌََِْع ُ هاَّلل َي ِض َر :
The Prophet sent a messenger to the village of the Ansar in the
morning of the day of 'Ashuraa' (10th of Muharram) to announce: "Whoever
has eaten something should not eat but complete the fast, and whoever is
observing the fast should complete it." She further said: "Since then we
used to fast on that day regularly and also make our children fast. We used
to make toys of wool for the children and if anyone of them cried for food,
he was given those toys till it was time to break the fast." (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
Hadith No. 1865 - Narrated by Ibn Abbas بَوٌَُِع ُ هاَّلل َي ِض َر:
The Prophet came to Medina and saw the Jews fasting on the day of
Ashuraa. He asked them about that. They replied: "This is a good day, the
day on which Allah rescued Bani Israel from their enemy. So, Moosa ()
fasted on this day." The Prophet said: "I have more claim over Moosa
5. () than you do." So, the Prophet fasted on that day and ordered (the
Muslims) to fast (on that day).” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
Hadith No. 1759 - Narrated by Ibn Abbas بَوٌَُِع ُ هاَّلل َي ِض َر :
The prophet observed the fast on Ashuraa (the 10th
of Muharram),
and ordered (Muslims) to fast on that day.
(Agreed upon Hadith i.e. Bukhari & Muslim).
Hadith No. 1977 - Narrated by Abi Katada ٌََُْع ُ هاَّلل َي ِض َر :
The prophet was asked about fasting on 'Ashuraa' (the 10th
of
Muharram), he said: "it expiates the previous year (for sins).” (Sahih Muslim)
Hadith No. 1917 - Narrated by Ibn Abbas بَوٌَُِع ُ هاَّلل َي ِض َر :
Allah’s Apostle said: "If I stay till coming (year), I will fast on the
ninth (of Muharram).” (Sahih Muslim)
NOTES
For your information, the prescribed date will lag or lead with one day according
to the start of the New Year (please ensure the correct date when the month of
Muharram actually commences. Accordingly the date should be
changed/adjusted in the adjacent boxes). Usually the difference is of -11 (minus
11) days every year. In other words next year, 9th & 10th Muharram will come on
29th & 30th of September 2017. There is a good, useful hint here that 300
Gregorian years equals 309 Hijri years, as we referred to in Surah Al Kahf Verse
No. (25), by this calculation, if a person reaches 33 Gregorian years he reaches 34
Hijri years, this means that when a Muslim fasts Ashuraa for 33 years he
managed to fast it in all seasons.
Remember the age of the kids & children, whose hunger can be diverted by
giving them toys. Sahaba's (companion of the Prophet ) children fasted
Ashuraa in similar ages.
Tasuaa & Ashuraa (9 and 10 of month Muharram) are confirmed Sunnah. The
Prophet fasted on Ashuraa in his life and recommended to fast on Tasuaa.
Approximate date of Ashura'a & Tasua'a in the coming years
