The document discusses a project called "Celebrate and Protect" which aims to increase childhood immunization rates in London. It uses a child's birthday card sent from a GP practice to the parent as a reminder for immunizations. The project wants to roll out this approach across six Olympic host boroughs of London and evaluate its effectiveness and potential for wider implementation. The purposes of the project are listed as increasing uptake of MMR1, MMR2 and 6-8 week checkups. It was proposed as a partnership with an academic evaluation group to publish peer-reviewed findings.

Celebrate and Protect uses a
child’s birthday card as a simple
evidence-based engagement tool
between GP practice and parent
as a call to action for childhood
immunisation to improve uptake.
The birthday card initiative has
been used on a small scale in
London but never at scale across
more than one borough. Celebrate
and Protect aims to roll out the
approach across the six Olympic
host boroughs and create an
evidence base for both large scale
implementation of the approach
and scalability of good practice
across multiple health and social
care geographies.
The purpose of the project:
• Increase childhood
immunisation uptake,
especially MMR1 and MMR2
• Increase attendance for 6 to
8wk check in primary care
• Provide an independent
evaluation of the birthday
card methodology at a
population scale
• Provide key learning for
scaling of best practice
interventions across
boundaries in London
The project was proposed as a
partnership intervention with
Sanofi Pasteur MSD, with external
academic evaluation with a view
to peer review publications of the
findings.

Homelessness is a prevalent problem, particularly with the
economic downturn. This is true, even in the borough of
Kingston which is seen to be affluent. Single people out of work
or on low income, if they are ineligible for help from the council,
find it extremely difficult to obtain affordable housing.
This project provides housing and welfare benefit advice, offers
a hostel placement service and endeavours to find the client
a space in a night shelter or hostel.

Oxygen works at the heart of Kingston’s most challenging and
deprived communities – Cambridge Estate and Kingsnympton
– working to support young people and give them hope for
the future. Many live in difficult circumstances and often go
from one crisis to another.
This project will change lives, help them to discover their
potential, raise their aspirations and empower them to achieve
their ambitions.

There are several pockets of deprivation and debt levels above
the national average in Kingston upon Thames.
Hidden hunger is an issue where there is low income and no
financial safety net or savings. An unexpected bill or reduction
in income can push a family into crisis, unable to buy basic food.
This project works in partnership with front line agencies and care
providers. They offer help, advice and 3-4 days supply of food.

1 in 4 women experience at least one incident of domestic
violence during their lifetime. Women who flee often leave
everything behind including family, friends, possessions,
jobs and security. If they cannot find space in a refuge they
face a stark choice between homelessness and destitution,
or remaining with an abusive partner.

Around 6 million people cannot access mainstream credit, often
due to having no credit history, or because of their work status.
Many have little choice but to pay extortionate interest from
loan sharks, leading to inescapable spirals of debt.
This project provides Kingston with a Credit Union – Kingston
Savers work in partnership with SurreySaves. They provide a safe
home for people’s savings, and offer flexible, affordable sources of
credit with no hidden charges or penalties for early repayment.

Bringing schools and parents together
equals academic and social success for
children which is why our successful parenting
seminars are endorsed by schools and
nurseries. Our seminars have been developed
in conjunction with teachers experienced
in early years learning, and draw on child
behaviour and developmental research.
what we do
We deliver a range of parenting tools to parents
within the familiar environment of the school
community. With the strategies learned during
the seminars, parents help children grow in
confidence and resilience, try new things,
persevere, and do well both academically and
socially. Parents learn how to support children
in academic, artistic and sporting endeavours
without pressurising them.
We also offer seminars for school and nursery
teachers. Teachers are dedicated, warm and
empathetic professionals. However, it can be
tiring stimulating a class, caring for children
and managing behaviour at the same time as
children absorb the learning tasks required
of them and learn to interact with others.
Teachers often find disciplining children
difficult. We deliver techniques that bring out
the best in children while ensuring discipline is
positive and effective.

Christine and Steve, parents

My husband and I
highly recommend the 10 week
parenting course.
The information and skills learnt were both
practical and useful and the changes we made
to our own behaviour remain with us to this day.
Money and time well spent - 20 hours
is a small price to pay for a lifetime of positive
parenting, bringing out the best
in your children.
Leo, father of two girls
When we first
signed-up for the course I was
curious but also concerned about giving
up what felt like so much of my time. In the
event it wasn’t a huge imposition on my time
and it was really worthwhile. We had specific
issues to tackle and within weeks we found
that things were turning round. After the
course I am pretty confident that I am a
better parent and that my kids are
happier too.
Your parenting tips still
steer our family ship. I don’t always
remember to respond the way I’d like
on reflection but It’s like finding a £10 pound
note at the bottom of your handbag... sometimes
finding just the right words to smooth through family
life. When my children were quite small I had a parent
practice top 10 tips printed out on the inside of our
pantry cupboard. I could then whip out some skills
with the cereal and be sure of a good day. I was
always amazed by the results! Happy
calm children. Bliss!
