A hot rod or a Harley Davidson with wicked decals and burning the road on flames….is
surely the most sought after American Dream. Kids and youngsters alike, flashy decals
have always enticed us all into its mesmerism and mysticism. Call it attitude reflector or
an exhibition of brand or team loyalty; decals have earned a place for it throughout
ages. But have you really tried to decipher the code of decals? Not just the design, but
the details of its manufacturing process. Let’s decode decals and know the mystery
behind its beauty.
A decal is basically known as a transfer in the form of plastic, cloth, paper or
ceramic substrate that has printed on it a pattern or image that can be
transferred to another surface. Initially, the technique was invented by a
French engraver Simon François Ravenet during the eighteenth century. It
became widespread during the decal craze of the late 19th century. Decals
are printed for virtually almost everything. From Football helmet decals to
Bumper stickers and window decals and from team decals and lacrosse helmet
decals to the much humble helmet stripes. It has won a place everywhere.
Decals are basically composed of certain layers from top to bottom. The
amalgamations of the following layers make a perfect and stunning decal.
A paper or film face-stock makes up the top layer of the labelstock. The printing is
done on the upper side of the face-stock.
2. An adhesive layer is applied to the bottom of the face stock.
A silicone or release coating layer is applied to the upper side of the backing
material.
A paper or film liner provides the bottom layer of the labelstock.
There are different variations of decals that include: water-slide or water-dip, vinyl
peel-and-stick. When the decal contacts with water, the glue loosens and the decal
can be removed from its backing and stuck on a particular surface.
Decals are widely used on hot rod automobiles and plastic models. They are also
used on guitars as a way of personalizing them. There are even Government
agencies that put decals on vehicles for entry pass or recognition. Bumper
stickers are again a widely used form of decals. They play multiple roles like
promoting or opposing philosophical or political position. People even opt to exhibit
their individuality through these decals and take part acts of road rage.
Interestingly, the first bumper stickers appeared shortly before World War II; they
were flag-like, and attached to the bumper by wires. It was replaced with
pressure-sensitive adhesive, and bumper stickers became more widespread and
practical. Going by the history and present of these sporty and mystic decals, the
craze seems not to burn out any soon …A part of history….A craze of the present…
decals are really awesome.
