Editor's Notes

  1. Cost of sensors, embedded systems, and devices continue to fall because of innovation, competitive pressures, expanding global markets and economies of scale. For example, the cost of a RFID identification tag fell by 40% to 10 cents last year. For these reasons, the use of sensors is expected to go from X to X over the next 6 years. There is a wider range of connectivity as multiple standards based wireless technologies drive low cost wireless connectivity options and new internet protocols make it possible to connect trillions of physical objects to the Internet. And there is the ubiquity of mobile devices. A billion mobile subscribers were added in the last 4 years bringing the total to 4.2 billion subscribers – providing the opportunity to connect, gather information and communicate to more people than ever before. Rise of cloud computing means that your IT infrastructure can scale as fast as your data does as new sources of data are added to your network. High performance and cloud computing combined with powerful new tools for data analysis are creating new ways of using and monetizing the high volume data that can be collected. ******************** BACKUP Why is the IoT just now getting so much publicity? The answer is we have reached a tipping point. Driven by relentless advances in computing, networking, communications and more, the core elements of the IoT are now ubiquitous and affordable. Another key factor is the recent launch of the latest Internet protocol, IPv6, which is capable of handling far more connections than previous versions. It’s all leading to a world where experts estimate that there will be over 50 billion things online by 2020. Internet of Things - at a Tipping Point for Adoption 96% of enterprise businesses surveyed could adopt some level of an IoT solution in the next three years, but implementation remains limited today (less than 20%) Falling sensor and device costs and improved power use computing, networking, communications and more, the core elements of the IoT are now ubiquitous and affordable. We can have cheap sensors measuring everything we can think of today – ubiquitous sensors world The cost of a RFID identification tag fell by 40% to 10 cents in the 18 months to April 2013 MEMS (e.g. accelerometers, gyroscopes and pressure sensors) prices down 80-90% in 5 years Wi-Fi routers have gone from $200 to under $10 – driving more embedded applications Chipset-embedded sensors, low power sensors, wireless power, longer battery life Wider range of connectivity Global IP traffic is predicted to increase 3x over the next 5 years (following an 8x rise in the last 5) Multiple standards based wireless technologies driving low cost wireless connectivity options Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) massively extended the number of unique Internet addresses available, making it possible to connect trillions of physical objects to the Internet Ubiquity of mobile devices A billion mobile subscribers were added in the last 4 years to 3.2 billion (almost half the population of the earth) 2012 experienced more mobile traffic than all the preceding years combined (0.9 exabytes/mo.) Rise of cloud computing, IaaS/PaaS Your IT infrastructure can scale as fast as your data does The worldwide market for cloud computing will grow 18.5% in 2013 to $131 billion (Gartner) by 2016, nearly two-thirds of all server workloads could be processed in the Cloud — accounting for almost two-thirds of all global data center traffic (Cisco) Increasing apps & changing business models Only 9% of senior managers believe that the IoT will not change the way their company conducts business in a meaningful way 7 billion connections in 2012, driven by multiple devices/SIMs as well as firms in many industry sectors roll out M2M applications to boost productivity and tap into new markets http://www.atkearney.com/documents/10192/760890/The_Mobile_Economy_2013.pdf http://newsroom.cisco.com/press-release-content?articleId=888280 http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2012/05/the-future-growth-of-the-internet-in-one-chart-and-one-graph/257811/ http://www.storagecraft.com/blog/cloud-computing-adoption-rates-predicted/
