In October 2011, the Park Division’s Volunteer Pro-
gram began working in this site. Located between Val-
lombrosa Avenue and the North One Mile parking lot.
This site has been heavily overgrown with exotic spe-
cies including Vinca, Ailanthus, and Black Walnut.
Vinca is of primary concern because it forms dense and extensive
mats along forest floors that squeeze out native vegetation and
harbors mosquitoes and rats.
The City of Chico’s volunteers have logged hundreds
of hours removing invasive plants and uncovering
many naturally occurring native plants, such as Valley
Oak.
Native plant species have been planted
where invasive weeds were removed.
Native species being restored to the area include:
Coyote Bush, Toyonberry, Deergrass, Western
Redbud, Mallow, Common Yarrow, Cali-
fornia Rose, Western Sycamore, and
Coffeeberry.
Native plants promote diversified plant life, healthy
ecosystem and oak regeneration. Volunteers will con-
tinue restoration efforts and water the site.
If you have a question about restoration projects
in Bidwell Park, please call the Park Division.
