Spidercide’s Compassion Proves He Has a Soul
1. An act of true “brotherly love” proves clones have souls.
Spider-Man’s clones face existential questions about whether they’re capable
of humanity in Ben Reilly: Spider-Man #5 (by J.M. DeMatteis and David
Baldeón). The five-issue miniseries by the incomparable J.M. DeMatteis (author
of Spider-Man classics like “Kraven’s Last Hunt” and “The Child Within”) looks
back at the brief period when Peter Parker’s clone Ben Reilly donned the webs
in Peter’s place. While he may wear the Spidey suit and even believe he’s the
true Peter Parker, he still feels like an imposter and has trouble relating to
others. It’s during this tumultuous time that Parker’s most forgotten and
warped clone, Spidercide, reappears pursuing his own answers about who or
what, he is.
Whether clones can have souls is a question that hangs heavily over Peter’s
doubles. Their abusive “father”, the Jackal, thought of them as merely a means
to destroy the original Parker. Before they bonded, Peter himself initially saw
Ben as a “fake” looking to steal his life. Ben, traumatized by the identity crisis
that has plagued him for years, has doubts about his place in the world and
views friendships as just another path toward rejection. Doctored test results
recently revealed he is the original Peter Parker, but deep down, Ben still
believes he’s Peter’s clone.

Ben is first made aware of Spidercide’s return through news reports of a serial
killer who finds his victims through online dating. Spidey has faced enemies
who have killed out of revenge or even pure sociopathy, but Spidercide claims
his victims in the pursuit of knowledge about what it means to be human.
Eventually, Reilly confronts his “brother” in Ravencroft, a maximum-security
institute that houses the worst of the web-slinger’s rogues’ gallery.
Spidercide’s body is as unstable as his mind, and he can manipulate his
molecules to take almost any form. Not only must Reilly take down someone
he can barely hold on to, but things go from bad to worse when Spidercide
releases Ravencroft’s most dangerous inmates.
Ben puts up a valiant fight against the likes of Scorpion, Shriek, Vermin, and
many others, but it’s ultimately a losing battle. Just as his world starts to fade,
Spidercide comes to his rescue. Triggered by Ben’s pain, he finds the Peter
Parker inside him and fights off the hordes of villains. Ben is still dying though,
and Spidercide heals him by inserting his life force through his chest. A wave
of emotions washes over Reilly as he feels all his sibling’s pain, joy, and
despair. In short, he feels everything that makes Spiderman Bedding
Set human.
The battle leaves Spidercide mortally wounded. As he dies, he makes peace
with Ben. Through Spidercide’s final act of compassion in saving his “brother”,
he realizes he has a soul. Ben, in his newfound empathy for his dying clone,
sees his own humanity shine through the darkness. The issue ends with Reilly
web-swinging through the New York City skyline, more assured of who he is
and hopeful for a better tomorrow.
Unfortunately, questions of identity and meaning have not gone away for Ben.
Stripped of his memories by an evil corporation in the recent “Beyond” arc, he
is more lost than ever before. Calling himself “Chasm”, he struggles to recall
the lessons of power and responsibility transferred to him when he was cloned
from Peter’s cells. However, it’s possible Spidercide left a little piece of himself
in Ben when he revived him many years before. If so, maybe Spidercide can
3. help his brother recover his humanity once more. Marvel’s Ben Reilly: Spider-
Man #5 is a truly excellent conclusion by J.M. DeMatteis and David Baldeón.
