Although donations of cadaveric organs have decreased, of late, living donor organs have been witnessing dramatic increase.
Especially, organs such as kidneys and liver are increasingly being donated by living donors. Moreover, living donations to the
stranger category has been rising considerably compared to living donations for family members. Increasing awareness among
people towards organ donations has been playing a major role in increasing organ donations from living persons.

Scarcity of donor organs is the major issue daunting the organ transplantation market. Donor organs are available to about one-third
of patients on waiting lists. While, majority of the patients on the waiting list die without the receipt of a donor organ. Apart from
shortage of organs, other major barrier for transplantation includes organ rejection. The primary factor affecting organ rejection is the
patient's vigorous immune system that treats the implanted donor organ as a harmful foreign body and fights off the organ. In
addition, finding an appropriate donor, preventing infections, and preventing graft vasculopathy or blood vessels blockage in
transplanted organ represent the other issues for organ transplantation.
