The lighting technology area is considered one of the most dynamically developing fields in electronic devices. The developments
relate not only to the light sources themselves, but also to the additional lighting components such as luminaires. Stimulated by the
ecology trend and regulations introduced by the governments worldwide to ban the inefficient light sources such as incandescent
lamps, many countries push the introduction of energy saving solutions, such as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) or LEDs.
Moreover, they have appealed to use more environmental friendly ones.

Currently, major players in the CFL technology market include Philips (the Netherlands), Osram (Germany), and GE (USA). However,
in recent years some other players such as Megaman®brand and Chinese manufacturers have taken a large share of the market, as
China accounts for xx% of the world's CFL productions. The European LED lighting market is dominated by Philips, Nichia (Japan),
and Osram Opto Semiconductors. Moreover, there are also some new companies such as Cree (USA), GE, Lexedis (Austria), and
Seoul Semiconductors (South Korea) that are emerging as strong players.
In the lighting area, there are a set of various factors that jointly impact the development of new technologies as well as their adoption
on the market. However, there are still some issues from the technology as well as market perspective that need to be solved to make
the new technologies widespread on the market. When asked about the biggest challenges in development and adoption of new
lighting technologies, most of the interviewees mentioned technical challenges such as lighting efficacy, thermal management (LED),
color rendering index (CRI), dimming possibility, uniformity of colors (mainly in case of architectural and commercial applications),
color stability, cost, materials' applications and manufacturing (in case of OLEDs). Some interviewees pointed out a limited range of
lighting system components, a lack of knowledge about lighting technologies, and also how lighting affects human beings. Future
trends in the lighting area are expected to be stimulated by four main factors: the need for better technical parameters, a wider
adoption of lighting controls systems, biodynamic lightings systems, and energy efficiency.
