ownCloud is a file sharing server that puts the control and security of your own data back into your hands.
In a Post-Snowden, Post C-51 world, I stumbled upon ownCloud through a desire to get my data out of the cloud onto something that I could control
Can do pretty much everything that Dropbox can
Free and open-source
Can do everything that Dropbox, OneDrive, Box.com, Google Drive, etc can do (sync/share files, file versioning and undelete)
Because of ownCloud’s open nature and open APIs, it can do so much more!
Store, watch and stream videos and music
File encryption at rest
Built in Contact Book through CARDDAV
Built in Calendar through CALDAV
Photo Gallery
Collaborative Document Editing
Web bookmarks, RSS feeds, almost everything that Google Apps can do
Anti-virus support
Check email
Supports multiple users with customizable security permissions
Much, much more
There is a server component involved that needs to be present
BUT if you have experience with WordPress or have someone in your organization that manages it, you pretty much have most if not all the requirements to run an ownCloud instance.
Requires a web server, PHP and SQL database
ownCloud server instance runs primarily on Linux or Mac or through a Virtual Machine (official VM appliances available); ownCloud 8.0 server can still run on Windows
Similar to WordPress, can also purchase managed ownCloud hosting accounts if you don’t know how or want to manage your own.
Security dependant upon security of the web server and configuration of the web service
Once you have the server backend configured, you can use apps to access it just like all the other solutions
Mobile client apps are better than Dropbox’s mobile app because you can set it to automatically two-way sync (not in real time though)!!
3rd party mobile apps are available that extend the functionality of ownCloud when paired with the equivalent server plug-in (ex. Bookmarks manager, RSS reader, SMS archiver, Mobile Notes similar to Evernote or Google Keep, etc)
Just like Dropbox, there are desktop sync apps that work exactly the same way
Desktop operating system agnostic
Can also access ownCloud through a web browser
Anyone who wishes to take back control their data
Anyone already familiar with setting up WordPress or similar web services
Where privacy and security of data is a concern (Decentralization is an important tool to protect privacy)
ownCloud can scale from single individual use to thousands of users (ex. ownCloud USask)
You get to choose how much disk quota you can have based on where you choose to install the server; the only limit is available hardware
Great for compliance concerns since you can explicitly choose where the data is hosted (ex. Health and education)
Standard Enterprise version comes with a support plan and starts at 50 users but is pretty expensive ($3,600)
Custom Enterprise version can be branded as well but requires contacting sales for a quote
There are cheaper 3rd party managed solutions available as well (ex. Just like web hosting) that use the Community Version as a base
