What Does Race Discrimination In
The Workplace Look Like?
Race discrimination is prevalent in the workplace, though most employers do not make it obvious that they are
discriminating against a worker or applicant. According to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
(EEOC), race discrimination “involves treating someone (an applicant or employee) unfavorably because he/she
is of a certain race or because of personal characteristics associated with race (such as hair texture, skin
color, or certain facial features).”
During the latest reporting year in the United States, the EEOC brought nearly 24,000 charges of race
discrimination against employers across the country. These charges made up approximately 33% of all
charges brought by the EEOC.
Federal law also protects workers from being discriminated against or being treated unfavorably because they
are married to or associated with a person of a certain color, race, or ethnicity. It is also illegal to discriminate
against somebody based on their national origin or the status of their immigration or citizenship if that person
is legally allowed to work in the United States.
How Does This Discrimination Show Up?
Racial discrimination shows up in the workplace in a variety of ways, and the person who has
been discriminated against often does not even realize it. Federal and state laws prohibit
discrimination based on race when it comes to various aspects of employment.
