- 2. The Book
Title: The violet : a Christmas and New-Year's gift or birth-day present, 1837
Author: Eliza “Miss” Leslie
Publisher: Philadelphia : E.L. Carey and A. Hart, [©1836]
The author already wrote one of the first American cookbooks when she also became known for her etiquette books, books for children, and
her contributions for literary annuals. The most famous was The Gift, a Christmas and New Year Present, which had submissions from classic
authors such as Edgar Allen Poe, Washington Irving, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. The Violet, however, was Leslie’s own take on The Gift and
although it ran for a number of years, it fell short.
