Dr. Qais Al-Awqati, the Robert F. Loeb Professor of Medicine at Columbia University, began his career in medicine after completing a rigorous course of postsecondary education. Born and raised in Baghdad, Iraq, Dr. Al-Awqati attended an American high school in that City before receiving his medical degree from the University of Baghdad’s College of Medicine. Immigrating to the United States in 1967, he furthered his medical education as a resident of the Baltimore City Hospital. Upon completing his residency, Dr. Qais Al-Awqati engaged in a fellowship at John Hopkins, training in infectious diseases.
