Why have allergies recently become so common? Over one fourth of the world suffers from them, but why are they caused? Could it be improvements in technolgy, pollution, or even parents being too clean around their children?
Allergies affect the lives of many. Over ¼ of the world suffers from these problems, but why do so many people have allergies?
Allergies are caused when an immune system becomes weak. When an immune system gets weak, it becomes confused, and when certain allergens such as pollen enter your immune system, your body mounts an attack. Depending on the type and magnitude of the allergy, an allergic reaction can range from a small sneeze or cough all the way to suffocation and death.
Doctors are divided on the reasons for the apparent rise in allergies. Some say that the rise in allergies is caused by environmental factors, while others say advances in technology make allergies seem more common.
Environmental factors can create a weak immune system. Obesity weakens your immune system, therefore making you more susceptible to allergens. Over cleanliness can also cause allergies, for in the first few years of life, children are building up immunities to things around them. If they do not encounter certain allergens during this time, they will not build up immunities to them. Last, pollution, much like obesity, weakens the immune system.
Other doctors believe that improvements in technology may be making it appear that allergies are becoming more common. Today, allergies an be easily detected using skin tests. These tests use small syringes or a device with multiple prongs to insert the allergens into your skin. After waiting awhile, it can be easily seen if you have a reaction or not, as seen here. First, the test is done on your back using many allergens, and if needed, the doctor will use more concentrated forms of the allergens on the arm. Other reasons allergies could be seemingly more common is because records are filed more efficiently. This means amounts of people with allergies can be found out much easier.
Today, there are a few ways to avoid reactions if you have allergies. First, avoid allergens that you react to. This is easiest if you have a food or medicine allergy, but much harder if you have an allergy to pollen or ragweed. Second are vaccinations. This is probably the most permanent choice. Doctors give a few shots a month for a few months, then the allergies are gone or are at least weaker. Last are temporary medications, used most commonly for seasonal allergies, these medicines are taken daily, and come in many brands and forms such as Zyrtecand Claritin.
