Sound and Music unveil fourth Google Cultural Institute Exhibition for
International Women’s Day 2015
Sound and Music announced their fourth exhibition with partners Google Cultural Institute for
International Women’s Day, ‘A Wo(man)’s work is never done’ curated by multi-media artist,
Poulomi Desai. Curated using Sound and Music’s British Music Collection, based at University
of Huddersfield.
Poulomi, Usurp founder and artist, was selected through an open call for curators of this
exhbitiion, by Sound and Music through their landmark partnership with the Google Cultural
Institute, who aim to make the extensive British Music Collection accessible to all.
Selected works in the exhibition include 'March of the Women' composed (to words by Cicely
Hamilton) in 1910 by English composer and radical suffragette, Ethel Smyth, Magz Hall –
sound and radio artist and co founder of Radio Arts’ ‘book-radio’ that transmits the words
contained into an eternal loop, which cannot be conventionally read, rather the listener must
tune to the right frequency in order to access it’s content.

About Poulomi Desai:
Poulomi Desai is best known for her large-scale sound and photography installations that
interrogate the politics of identity, listening and perception. Recent commissions and
exhibitions include The Serpentine Gallery, The Photographers Gallery and The Science
Museum. She runs Usurp Art, an experimental tactical media artist-led space where she has
curated over 100 exhibitions, events and the Usurp Chance Tour featuring Stewart Lee and
Steve Beresford. "Her irreverent aim is to shatter the contours of these fixed notions of
sexual, national, cultural, personal, political and diasporic identities" - Professor Stuart Hall
