the Bulldogs have been in a conference with enough members to allow for a championship game per NCAA rules.

ZAXBY’S HEART OF DALLAS BOWL MAKES SEVEN
After accepting a bid to play in the Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl on Dec. 7, LouisianaTech officially secured its seventh bowl
game in the program’s Division I history. This will mark the first bowl game the Bulldogs will play in the state ofTexas. In those bowl
games, LATech has posted a 2-3-1 record and is looking for a win over Illinois to move its all-time bowl record to an even .500.

LONE(SOME) STAR STATE
After playing five games over the last two years in the state ofTexas, LouisianaTech is feeling a little lonesome for the Lone
Star State this year as the Bulldogs will only play two games there – at NorthTexas onThursday, Sept. 11 and in the Zaxby’s Heart of
Dallas Bowl on Dec. 26. Of the 58 out-of-state student-athletes on the Louisiana Tech roster, almost half (28) call Texas home. This
marks the fewest games inTexas for LATech since 2011 when the Bulldogs did not make a trip to the Lone Star State.
KENNETH DIXON SURPASSES 1,000 SEASON, 3,000 CAREER RUSHING YARDS
Junior Kenneth Dixon has reached two major plateaus in his last two games. On Nov. 22 at Old Dominion Dixon became just
the fourth LouisianaTech player in school history to run for over 3,000 yards in his career. Then on Nov. 29 against Rice he surpassed
the 1,000 yard mark on the ground, making him just the third player in school history to record multiple seasons with 1,000 rushing
yards.
Dixon enters the bowl game with 3,347 rushing yards in his career and needs only five yards to match Porter’s school record
career mark of 3,352 yards.

The Bulldogs have managed to force at least three turnovers in eight of their 13 games this season and have forced at least
four turnovers in four of their last five games.
That defensive prowess is being felt in several national categories as LouisianaTech ranks in the top 25 in multiple defensive
categories and has consistently forced turnovers from opposing teams in every game.

When Manny Diaz took over the LATech defense, little did he know he was inheriting what was quietly becoming one of the
best secondaries in Conference USA with some players as good as any in the country. Le’Vander Liggins, Adairius Barnes and Xavier
Woods lead a group that is challenging most teams’passing games in 2014.

LOCKS OF LOVE
One of the newest Bulldogs to make an immediate impact this season as been Hardin,Texas native MitchVillemez.
It is hard not to noticeVillemez on the playing field during games and it is not just because of his 35 total tackles this
season which ranks 11th on the team or his starting in 10 games.Villemez can be seen with a long red ponytail and he has that
hair style for a very specific reason: he is growing it out for Locks of Love.
Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the
United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.
In order to donate to Locks of Love, hair most be a minimum of 10 inches long before it can be cut and donated.

HESTER DEFIES MEDICAL ODDS, OVERCOMES RAMSAY HUNT SYNDROME
During Mardi Gras break last spring, strength and conditioning coach Kurt Hester felt a dizziness and suffered from a partial
(temporary) facial paralysis. After several tests, he was diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. The Mayo Clinic describes Ramsay
Hunt syndrome as occurring when a shingles infection affects the facial nerve near one of the ears. In addition to causing a painful
shingles rash, it can also cause facial paralysis and hearing loss in the affected ear. And yet he never missed a day of work.
He refused to allow the facial paralysis to slow him down but the vertigo did cause him some issues. Hester would be yelling
at players in the weight room above the weights, encouraging them to keep working harder and then the vertigo would hit without
warning.AllHestercoulddowouldbetograbaholdofsomethingasquickaspossibleandwaitafewmomentsuntilhecouldorient

CODY SOKOL AMONG NATIONAL PASSING LEADERS
New Louisiana Tech quarterback Cody Sokol has jumped right in to his role as the Bulldogs’gunslinger and the results are
quickly showing how well he has embraced this offense. Entering the bowl game, Sokol has 29 passing touchdowns this season,
ranking him tied for 11th in the nation along with Notre Dame’s Everett Golson and Buffalo’s Joe Licata. Last season, LA Tech only
threw for 10 touchdowns throughout the entire 2013 campaign.
SOKOL ALSO A STEADY HAND
Not only has Cody Sokol impressed with his overall numbers (3,117 passing yards and 29 touchdowns) but he has also im-
pressed with consistent numbers this season.
Through eight out of 13 games this season Sokol has thrown at least 20 completions. That is an impressive mark considering
the challenging road schedule LouisianaTech has faced this season with an Auburn defense ranked in the top 20 in the nation and
an Oklahoma defense ranked in the top 40 in the nation. Ironically one of the games he did not throw for 20 completions was in LA
Tech’s most dominant win of the season, a 55-3 win over UTEP.

OH CAPTAIN, MY (OVERTIME) CAPTAIN!
O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is (not quite yet) done! While LouisianaTech has four captains (Houston Bates, Kenneth
Dixon,Tony Johnson and Hunter Lee) none of them can be seen at the coin toss at midfield when LouisianaTech enters an overtime
game. Instead, punter Logan McPherson will be at midfield.
Skip Holtz explains the reasoning behind that:

THE SIXTH YEAR’S THE CHARM
LATech wide receiver Sterling Griffin was granted a sixth
year of eligibility by the NCAA on Aug. 18 allowing him to com-
pete for the Bulldogs in the 2014 season. Griffin, a native of Opa
Locka,Florida,wasoneofLouisianaTech’stopreceiverswith357
receiving yards on 33 catches last year, averaging 10.8 yards per
catch. His 74-yard touchdown catch at Rice last November was
the longest play of the year for the Bulldogs.
Griffin was the lone sixth-year applicant for LA Tech in
2014 coming off a year where the Bulldogs submitted six eli-
gibility waivers to the NCAA. Last season, LA Tech was granted
three sixth-year waivers and two more waivers allowing an ad-
ditional season of eligibility.
ReceiversRichieCasey,AndrewGuillotandScottCathcart
and offensive linemen Larry Banks and Jeremy Graffree were
granted eligibility in 2013 by the NCAA but the final two deci-
sions involving Banks and Cathcart did not become final until
three days prior toTech’s first game of the season.

for his final year of eligibility. Burch was a member of the foot-
ball team in 2010 and 2011 as well as a member of the baseball
team before focusing on baseball in 2012 and 2013. With his
baseball eligibility exhausted, Burch has returned to football for
one last fall. He is 1-for-1 in his football career after completing
a 12-yard pass against Houston on Sept. 17, 2011 on a fake field
goal play.

BORN TO (STOP THE) RUN
LouisianaTech’s defensive front has been stifling this year, ranking highly in several categories but the Diaz-led defense was
impressive inTech’s 31-20 win at Southern Miss as the Bulldogs held USM to -31 rushing yards. The last time LATech held an oppo-
nent to negative rushing yards was in 2009, limiting a powerful Hawai’i offense to -7 rushing yards.

STOPPING THE RUN? NO WORRIES, DIXON CAN ADAPT
On Oct. 25, Southern Miss made a concerted effort to stop Kenneth Dixon’s run game. Little did the Golden Eagles know,
the junior from Strong, Arkansas can do more than just run. Dixon finished the game with 124 receiving yards on six catches with
two touchdowns, including an 84-yard touchdown reception. He added 41 yards rushing to his credit for 165 all-purpose yards in
LouisianaTech’s first win in Hattiesburg since 1982.
DIXON SETS SCHOOL RECORD FOR 100-PLUS RUSHING YARD GAMES
LA Tech tailback Kenneth Dixon broke yet another school record on Oct. 18, 2014 when his 121 rushing yard performance
markedhis14thcareergamerushingfor100ormoreyards.DixonhadbeentiedwithJasonDavisforthemost100-yardperformanc-

PINSON RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR DOMINATING PERFORMANCE
Terrell Pinson received national recognition following his
performance against UTSA on Oct. 18, being named the FWAA/
Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week, the Col-
lege Football Performance Awards National Defensive Player of the
Week, receiving a helmet sticker on ESPN’s GameDay Final and re-
ceiving Defensive Player of the Week honors from both Conference
USA and the Louisiana SportsWriters Association.
Pinson had a career day as he registered seven total tackles
(four solo, three assisted) with a solo stop for a loss of two yards,
two interceptions returned for 34 yards, a fumble recovery returned
for a touchdown, two pass break-ups (one of which was almost a
third interception) and a quarterback hurry.
His performance led Tech’s defense to force four UTSA turn-
overs despite the Roadrunners entering the game at plus-3 in turn-
over margin for the year. The win marks Louisiana Tech’s third 3-0
start in league play since the school moved up to the Division I-A/
FBS level in 1989.
He is believed to be the first LouisianaTech player to receive defensive national player of the week honors.
LA TECH SETTING STADIUM RECORDS ... AWAY FROM HOME
It began in Lafayette, Louisiana and continued in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Louisiana Tech’s 2014 football team is intent on
leaving its mark on the history books but the Bulldogs are doing so on other teams annals.

The streak of record breaking (this year, at least) started on Sept. 6 when Kenneth Dixon set a new Cajun Field record with a
99-yard rushing touchdown. That run also set new LouisianaTech and Conference USA records.
BULLDOGS GET BIG WINS IN 2014, MOST DOMINATING PAIR SINCE 1922
With LouisianaTech’s 55-3 win over UTEP on Oct. 4 and 59-10 win overWestern Kentucky on Nov. 1, the Bulldogs have regis-
tered two wins this season by at least 49 points, the first time a LouisianaTech team has achieved that feat since 1922.That season,
LATech defeated Clarke Memorial College, 100-0, and beat Southern Arkansas, 89-0.

TAKING A STAND
Louisiana Tech’s defense had a hot start to its Sept. 11
game at North Texas as the Bulldogs opened the game forc-
ing the Mean Green into six consecutive three-and-outs upon
kickoff. That marks the first time LA Tech’s defense has held an
opponent to six consecutive three-and-outs since facing South
Carolina on Nov. 7, 1992 (a game that resulted in a 14-13 loss
to the Gamecocks). In that game, South Carolina was held to six
consecutive three-and-outs with a kickoff being returned for a
touchdown, something the NCAA does not observe as a posses-
sion.

WAKE ME UP WHEN SEPTEMBER ENDS
Summer has come and past, The innocent faint of heart
can never last, wake me up when September ends! No doubt
Skip Holtz is thinking this when he looks at the schedule the
Bulldogs face in the first five weeks of the year facing two top-
five teams. In all, Tech’s four FBS opponents posted a 41-12
(.774) record last season with all four playing in bowl games.
The schedule is tough enough when you consider the
timing,thelocationsofgamesandwhatpostseasongameseach
team played in but the combined non-conference opponents
record of 38-14 ranks LATech’s schedule the second-toughest in
the nation. OnlyWyoming is playing a group of non-conference
opponents that registered more wins in 2013.
Additionally, the Bulldogs were the only program to face
two top-five opponents in the first five weeks of the year.
SEEING RED
The Oct. 4 game against UTEP marked Louisiana Tech’s
annual Community Trust Bank RED OUT game where the Bull-
dogs wear their red jerseys at home instead of their tradition-
al home blue jerseys. Since instituting the CTB RED OUT game
promotion in 2009, Louisiana Tech has now gone 3-3 in those
games.

DOMINATING CONFERENCE WIN … BEST SINCE 1953
With LouisianaTech’s dominating 55-3 win, the Bulldogs posted their largest win in a conference game since 1953. LATech’s
52-point win over UTEP was last equaled on Sept. 26, 1953 when LouisianaTech defeated Louisiana-Monroe (then known as North-
east Louisiana), 61-6, in Gulf States Conference play.
COFFEE, ANYONE?
When LouisianaTech kicked off against UTSA on Oct. 18 at 11 a.m. CT at Joe Aillet Stadium in Ruston, it marked the earliest
recorded kickoff time for the Bulldogs at home in school history.
Prior to the Oct. 18 kick off, the earliest recorded kickoff time for LouisianaTech at home had been Noon CT in 2004 when LA
Tech hosted Nevada on Labor Day.

Sept. 19, 1998 when the Bulldogs defeated Louisiana-Lafayette, 77-14.
•The 76 total points is the second most ever by a Conference USA team. The record total of 77 points has happened
three times in the leagues history.
•The 76 points is the second-most ever scored by a team at Joe Aillet Stadium
•With the 76-31 win, LATech has defeated three teams this season by at least 45 points. All three opponents
were conference foes (Rice,WKU and UTEP).
• LATech scored a season-high 76 points, marking the third time this season the Bulldogs have scored at least 55
in a single game (UTEP andWKU).
•The 76 total points scored is equal to or more than four of the six performances byTech’s men’s basketball team
team this year. The Dunkin’‘Dogs, returning four starters, ranked 12th in the nation in scoring last season.

nation to kickoff its home schedule.

LA TECH WITH AS MANY STARTS AS IT HAS QUARTERBACKS
The offensive line is not the only position group that enters the season looking to gain ex-
perience quickly in 2014 with the quarterback position also seeing significant turnover. Entering
the season, Louisiana Tech has as many quarterback starts on its roster (six) as it does number of
quarterbacks. All six of those starts belong to redshirt sophomore Ryan Higgins, who made all six
last season as a redshirt freshman.
In all, the six LouisianaTech quarterbacks have played in a combined nine games through-
out their careers with seven games played for Higgins, one for Cody Sokol when he was at Iowa
and one forTaylor Burch before he initially left the team to focus on baseball in 2011.With only a
combined nine games played among its quarterback roster, LouisianaTech is tied for 11th among
all schools for the least experience at the position.

After LouisianaTech fell at No. 4/3 Oklahoma, 48-16, to open the 2014 campaign the Bull-

NITZ-HOLTZ CONNECTION
The connection between LA Tech play-by-play announcer Dave Nitz and the Holtz family
goes much farther back than LouisianaTech. Several years decades ago, Nitz was the play-by-play
announcer at William & Mary. During his time in Williamsburg, Va., Nitz called games when the
head coach of theTribe was Lou Holtz, the father of current LouisianaTech head coach Skip Holtz.

TWENTY-ONE THE MAGIC NUMBER
Dating back to the 1998 season, history has shown that when the Louisiana Tech offense
struggles the team tends to struggle. Since 1998 the Bulldogs have compiled a 4-62 record when
scoring less than 21 points. Before the Bulldogs won the 2008 Independence Bowl vs. Northern

as his brother, Matt, was the deep snapper for LATech four straight years before him.The Graham
