Introduce team
We will literally ask this question to audience to engage them quickly.
Ask to show hands.
State that we could have guessed that. Why? Because…. (transition to next slide)
Because the vast majority of Delawareans commute by car to work.
More than 80%
Note that all the way at the end is bicycling. (may say something like, “what’s that on the end”, and walk across stage and point it out)
Say that’s unfortunate.
State that a lot of people probably want to bike to work. Say something like “I bet a lot of people in audience would say it’s green, healthy, fun”
Also, note delaware is doing a great job building infrastructure to bike around (shoutout to one of the sponsor organizations, DENREC!)
So if many people think it’s a good idea, we have the infastructure, why aren’t people biking to work???

This probably has something to do with it.
Average commute tiem by car in DE is 25 mins.
Let’s do a thought experiment
Assume 25 mins car ride is 10 miles.
It can take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours to bike 10 miles, depending on your fitness level
Ask the audience who would want to bike 10 miles to work, work a full day, then bike 10 miles home? Show of hands
Maybe make a joke if someone raised their hands that we have a professional cyclist in the audience or make joke that you would spend the afternoon begging coworkers to drive you home.
Wouldn’t it be great though if you could get a couple miles of biking in to incorporate nature or exercise into your daily routine?
That’s where commute+ comes in
commute + is a multimodal transportation routing solution that uses opensource map data, routing software, and DelDOT transit feeds.
It will find bike safe routes to nearby bus stops, allowing you to bike for a small protion of your commute and take the bus the rest of the day.
Let us show you how it works
Carfree is an opensource app for android and ios
We can edit the open street maps
Open steet maps is mapping application like google maps. But anyone can edit it.
Every road and place you see here was created by a volunteer like you and me
Cities around the world are using openstreet maps and civic engagement to make their cities safe for cycling.
Intro rhetorical question “Why is this a sustainable solution?”
Answer: “It is built on open data and open source software”
Go in to the data side first…
Openstreetmaps is a open source continually improved by community members. It is also used as a backed for multiple applications throughout the world.
DART GTFS is provided by DELDOT.
and is openly available.
*freely available
Now go into the open source software…
CarFree Ato Z is an open source application maintained by the company conveyal. When Delaware chooses to implement carFreeAtoZ, they would have a company to support any issues that they have
