Friday, September 19, 2014 No. 2781 EST: 1893 PRICE: 51p
An edition of the Coalville Times
Swadlincote Times
A WOODVILLE bus shelter has been
smashed up leaving razor-sharp
edges and shards of broken glass all
over the street.
The shelter on Woodville Road,
near the Clock Garage, heading
towards the village of Hartshorne,
has had four of its glass window
pains smashed leaving sharp edges
on the shelter.
Shards of sharp, thick and broken
perspex were also left lying all over
the street in and around the shelter.
Councillor Pat Murray, who repre-
sents Woodville on South Derbyshire
District Council, commented on the
damage and how it could cause seri-
ous accidents.
He said: "This has to be an act of
vandalism, we do not know when it
happened, we do not know who has
done it or why they have done it, but
there is no sign of an accident.
"It is not thin flimsy glass, this is
thick perspex that has been
smashed.
"Any small children coming along
who fall over will fall straight on it
and it could really hurt and injure
them.
"I hope it is put right before some-
body gets seriously injured."
The Times contacted both officers
at Derbyshire Police and chiefs at
South Derbyshire District Council,
the main council authority which
deals with this type of incident, but
neither had any record of the
smashed bus shelter being reported.
A Spokesman for South
Derbyshire District Council, said:
"We have rung through to our depot
to get people out there to clear up the
site of any dangerous glass.
"We had not received any reports
of the break so we cannot say how or
why this has happened at this stage.
"Our people will be getting out to
the site on Woodville Road shortly
and when they get there, it may be
possible to work out when, why and
how it has happened."
A spokesman for Derbyshire
Police said: "Currently we have had
no reports of a smashed bus shelter
in Woodville, but if anyone has any
information they should contact us
on 101."

MORE than 300 houses
are set to be built in
Church Gresley after pro-
posals were passed by
South Derbyshire District
Council.
Planning chiefs at the authority
approved the outline application for
306 homes, in Church Street, with
access via Rockcliffe Close, at a
planning committee meeting on
Tuesday, September 16.
Despite some members express-
ing concerns that the access
arrangements could lead to traffic
congestion, these reasons were not
enough to deny the application.
Councillor Ben Stuart, who rep-
resents Church Gresley on South
Derbyshire District Council, spoke
after the meeting.
He said: "Obviously I am disap-
pointed that it's going ahead.
"I am happy that the schools are
going to get money but the access
arrangements are not ideal.
"The Thorpe Downs Road and
Rockcliffe Close access is always
going to be an issue in winter.
"Gresley has been built on signif-
icantly over the last 10 years and
this is some of the last greenery
left.
"The amount of affordable hous-
ing being put forward is also not a
lot considering the size of the appli-
cation."
The Highways Authority have
stated no access problems with the
development.
15 per cent of the development
will be affordable housing and St
George's Primary School and the
Pingle School will receive £695,339
and £790,104, respectively, as part
of a section 106 agreement towards
the influx of extra children.
Pingle’s Sixth Form will also
obtain an extra £335,302 as part of
the same agreement.
Cllr Bob Wheeler, who represents
Linton on South Derbyshire
District Council, said: "Many mem-
bers shared the concerns of resi-
dents and ward members about the
highways and road safety aspect of
the application.
"But we knew that were the
application to be refused and went
to appeal, a plan-
ning inspector
would have regard-
ed the view of the
H i g h w a y s
Authority, which
had no objections.
"The appeal
would have
undoubtedly been
successful, the
application would
have been granted
and the council
might well have had
costs to pay, which
would help nobody."
With the passing
of this application
bosses at the dis-
trict council have
also put forward a
"no-risk" pot of
money to go towards
a community stadi-
um for Gresley FC,
totalling £1 million, should an
application come before the council.
A minimum two year waiting
time has been put on the plans to
allow Gresley FC to see if the pro-
posals could be viable.
Councillors also asked for the
developers to look at making
improvements to the flooding and
drainage system, look at alterna-
tive access arrangements and that
no construction would take place
outside the hours of 7:30am and
7pm on weekdays and 8am and
12pm on Saturdays.
No construction would also take
place on Sundays or public holi-
days.
