1. Types of Grants
There are a multitude of grants out there that many officeholders simply don’t know
about. There are historical preservation grants, disaster recovery grants, archival grants,
improvement funds...the list literally goes on and on. Regarding the source of these grants,
there are federally funded grants, state funded grants, locally funded grants, and even
privately funded grants. All of which could be available for your historical preservation
purposes. Don’t forget, if you live in an area or state that has experienced a recent natural
disaster, your records may be the perfect candidate for grant moneys.
Availability
Simply because a grant has been around for a while doesn’t necessarily
mean that there isn’t any money left. Many times, grant funds are still
available. It just takes a little sleuthing to find out how much is available.
Grant Best Practices
1. Make a clear and compelling reason for the grant.
Concisely explain your need and purpose.
2. Offer useful background information whenever possible.
3. Quantify whenever possible. For example, “preservation
of 50,000 land instruments.”
4. Double check for spelling and grammatical errors.
5. Clearly define goals, scope, results and financial need.
