Carnations are a cool season flowering plant that prefers temperatures between 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit. They can be grown from seed sown in September through October and transplanted in November through December, or propagated through cuttings, division, or seeds. Carnations thrive in fertile, well-drained, slightly alkaline or neutral soil and should be spaced 12 inches apart. They require fertilizer high in phosphorus to hasten flowering.
