1. Check your hwk (dating profile for
the duke)
Get your hwk out as soon as you come in
Proof-read it and make any corrections that you spot
Now work in pairs – follow the instructions carefully
1. TAKE ONE PROFILE AT A TIME
2. THE PERSON WHO WRITTEN IT HAS TO SAY WHAT EACH THING SHOWS
ABOUT THE DUKE and if they can’t justify it then you need to find new thing
together.
Eg. I like women who appreciate the power I have (JUSTFY = HE SAYS THAT SHE
DOES NOT APPRECIATE HIS GIFT OF A 900 YEAR OLD NAME)
2. COMPLETE THIS:
Testing my knowledge and understanding
1. Who are the main characters and what do you
learn about them? (google any obvious adjectives and
show the replacement) Draw a picture of them and
put key words and quotes around them.
2. The poem tells a story. What is it? Identify some
of the key events (aim = 5-10)
3. Explain your first impressions of the
narrator/speaker (the Duke)? Use quotes.
Ext. What do you notice about the sounds or
patterns of the rhythm and rhyme as it is read to
you?
3. Read through the list of themes below and give each one a score to reflect the
importance you think it has in the poem. Use these scorings:
0 – No Significance
5 – The theme features in a minor way
10 – The theme features in a major way

4. Chose from the following tasks:
• Storyboard in your book)
Storyboard the poem or produce a graphic version. This helps you
to explore the sequence of events and to look at ambiguity
(where things are hinted at or unclear).
• Right to reply?
In order to consider a different point of view, write a monologue
from either the deceased Duchess, the artist or the unnamed
servant. Consider what you know from the text, what is hinted at
and what you need to imagine.
• Character sketches
Create a mood board with images and quotes for the Duke, the
Duchess, the artist, etc.
• Modern Version
Write a modern version for the 21st Century of this poem or
change the poem into prose (a story/novel)
