***Possible spoilers for the end of Game of Thrones, you have been warned.***
Its all been one big lie...
OK, so maybe that's a bit of an oversimplification. Allow me to explain...
Last season's finale showed us that Robert's Rebellion was based on a lie, the lie that
Rhaegar Targaryen had kidnapped and raped Ned Stark's sister, Lyanna. The truth is: Rhaegar
and Lyanna were lovers, in spite of the fact that Rhaegar was already married with children and
Lyanna was promised to Robert Barratheon. We learned, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that
they weren't just lovers. In fact, they were married in a secret ceremony in Dorne after Rhaegar
had his marriage to Elia Martell annulled. Neither of them apparently had the chance to tell
anyone else before they met their ends. Rhaegar died facing Robert on the Trident (or so we've
been told...) and Lyanna died giving birth to the character we've come to know as Jon Snow.
The only reason we know about this marriage taking place is an entry in the journal of the
Maester who annulled Rhaegar's marriage. We see the truth of it for ourselves in Bran's vision.
We saw the scene at the Tower of Joy, where Lyanna, bleeding to death after a difficult birth,
entrusts her son, the literal song of ice and fire, (from the combination of his Stark White Walker
blood and his Targaryen blood of the Dragon) the rightful heir to the Iron Throne whose name is
Aegon Targaryen, to her brother and Robert Barratheon's best friend, Ned Stark. Lyanna
informs Ned of the babies name and the circumstances of his birth, and with her final dying
breaths extracts a promise from him. She asks Ned to promise that he will never tell anyone,
especially Robert, of the boy's true parentage. Her dying words were, "Promise me, Ned." For
someone as duty and honor bound as Ned, this is a terrible promise to have to make, but Ned
promises his sister on her deathbed that he will keep her secret. As we know from the show,
Ned is a man of his word, and he never reneges on that promise, even when his world crumbles
to dust around him and he ultimately loses his head.
Imagine how Ned must have felt. After all, he had just found out that almost everything he
was fighting for was a lie. His father and brother both died because of this lie. After hearing the
news of Rhaegar's kidnapping of his beloved daughter, Ned's father, Rickard, and his elder
brother Brandon travelled to King's Landing to confront the Mad King Aerys over the behavior of
his son and heir. For his trouble, Rickard Stark was cooked by wildfire in a suit of armor while
Brandon was made to watch in horror with a rope tied around his neck. In a vain attempt to
reach his father and save him, Brandon ends up strangling himself to death. This is the inciting
incident of Robert's Rebellion and the fall of the Targaryen dynasty, and it all happened
because none of them knew what really transpired between Rhaegar and Lyanna.
The damage doesn't stop there. No, this lie was like a stone thrown into a calm pool of water,
the ripples stretched out across the whole of Westeros. Rhaegar lost his life fighting Robert on
the Trident, his breastplate caved in by the rebels war hammer, the rubies that were set in his
breastplate carried down river, along with his blood. This happens before Ned learns the truth
about his sister and Rhaegar Targaryen.
Afterwards, Grand Maester Pycelle convinces the Mad King to open the gates of King's
Landing to Tywin Lannister and his army, against the advice of Tywin's own son, Jamie. The
city gates are opened to the Lannister army and instead of keeping his word, Tywin, never one
to play the losing side, betrays the trust of the Mad King. So while Tywin's army sacks the city,
he dispatches Gregor Clegane, The Mountain That Rides, and Amory Lorch (who isn't
mentioned in the TV show) to the Red Keep with orders to kill the children of Rhaegar and the
Mad King, so they can lay their lifeless, infant bodies at the feet of the new king and prove their
loyalty beyond question. The Mountain does not find the children of the Mad King in the Red
Keep, due to them having been spirited away. However, he does find Rhaegar's son, daughter
and also his wife, so Gregor kills Aegon by dashing his head against the wall while his mother
watches, and then rapes Elia, while he's covered in the blood of her infant son and then
proceeds to crush her skull. In the books, it's Amory Lorch who kills Rhaenys, dragging the
screaming infant from under her mother's bed and stabbing her to death. In the TV show, the
Red Viper accuses Gregor of having murdered both of Elia's children. In the end, the result is
the same, Lord Tywin has the bodies wrapped in Lannister cloaks and lays them before his new
king, Robert Barratheon.
While Tywin is sacking the city and Gregor is murdering Rhaegar's family, Jamie attends to
the Mad King. He begs Aerys to surrender peacefully to Robert Barratheon (who has come with
his army to King's Landing fresh from his victory on the Trident) and his father. Instead, Aerys
instructs his pyromancer to "Burn them all, burn them in the their homes. Burn them in their
beds," and let the traitor be king of the ashes. Jamie learns that Aerys has caches of wildfire
stored all around the city, underground. Under all the major buildings and thoroughfares, the
Sept of Baelor (we've seen the results of that in the show...) the slums of Flea Bottom, even the
Red Keep itself. It's more than enough wildfire to level the city and kill the entire population of
King's Landing, including everyone in the Red Keep, in one fell swoop. (More on this later...)
Before allowing this to happen, Jamie kills the king's pyromancer and then drives his sword into
the back of the Mad King as he tries to flee.
Jamie explains what actually took place while he's in the tubs beneath Harrenhall with
Brienne: "Burn them all," he kept saying. "Burn them all." "I don't think he expected to die. He-
he meant to... burn with the rest of us and rise again, reborn as a dragon to turn his enemies to
ash. I slit his throat to make sure that didn't happen. That's where Ned Stark found me." And,
tragically, what is probably the single most honorable thing that comes out of the entire fall of
the Targaryen dynasty, the saving of all of those innocent lives, brands Jamie as the most
dishonorable man in the realm in the eyes of almost everyone. Kingslayer, Oathbreaker, Man
Without Honor. Once again, because nobody knows the truth. This is one of our author's
themes, lies and the consequences of these lies, how they effect everyone around them,
poisoning everything that they touch.
The story of Robert's Rebellion is not the only lie in our story, there is another, even bigger lie
that I believe we're going to discover in this next season, the lie of The Long Night, the Battle for
the Dawn and the prophecy of Azor Ahai. I don't believe that the last battle with the White
Walkers actually happened as we've been told, there was no glorious last hero who single-
handedly led the fight against the darkness. I believe it ended with a pact, and the terms of this
pact were actively being fulfilled, up until about roughly 200 years ago.
The arrival of Good Queen Alysanne to the North, and the ending of the lords right to the first
night ended what I believe may have been practiced in the North for nigh on 8,000 years. The
offering of bastard infant children, unwanted products of the lords right to the first night, to the
White Walkers. Sacrificing to the Others, as it's described in the books. I believe this was
carried out by the brothers of the Night's Watch, and the ending of this practice, by all but
Craster (up until his death), is what led to the White Walkers return.
We've seen in our story that Craster, as disgusting a monster as he was, was able to
successfully placate the White Walkers by giving them his infant sons. We've also seen that the
White Walkers reproduce by turning infant humans into White Walkers, which tells me that they
cannot reproduce on their own. I don't believe this to have always been the case, but I also
believe that these are the proverbial Old Gods, and they are very old. So old, in fact, that they
have degenerated to the point where they cannot reproduce themselves without using a human
baby. There's a reason we've never seen a female White Walker, they do not exist anymore.
They may have once, but I believe this is no longer the case.
So, ultimately, the White Walkers are no more evil than we are, they are simply trying to survive,
any way they can, and cannot do so without the help of humans. This may also be the case
with the Chlidren of the Forest, this may be the reason that we've only seen female Children.
They may also be unable to reproduce on their own, and in our TV show they may also now be
extinct for all we know, I believe we'll find out more about that this season. I am less sure of the
premise that the Children cannot reproduce on their own, or that if it's true it even matters
anymore, given they may now be extinct. I am fairly certain that it is the case with the White
Walkers.
You may be asking why I indicted the brother's of the Night's Watch in this conspiracy to give
unwanted human infants to the White Walkers. The answer lies at the Nightfort, it's a giant gate
with the face of a weirwood. It's called the Black Gate, and I believe it may have been used for
thousands of years to sacrifice bastard children to the Old Gods. This gate is only opened by
the reciting of the Night's Watch vows, by a sworn brother of the Night's Watch, and this was
part of that organizations true purpose. We see Samwell Tarly utilize this gate to get Bran,
Meera, Jojen and Hodor beyond the wall in the TV show. The men of the Night's Watch really
were the guardians against the return of the Night, but not in the way we might have originally
thought. When Good Queen Alysanne ends the lords right to the first night, I believe that also
ended the giving of unwanted, bastard infants, products of that despicable practice, to the
Others.
In fact, I believe that Craster may have been set up beyond the wall (remember, Craster's
father was supposedly a member of the Night's Watch) in order to keep the Walkers at bay by
giving them children, and also in order to weaken the White Walkers genetically, by giving them
only male children who were the products of incest.
Although our story takes place in an obviously patriarchal society, the irony is that the genes
that give people special abilities- greensight, warging and dragon riding, all come from the
matriarchal side of the gene pool. The mother's genes are what's important, only by having a
mother who was a dragon rider, or warg or greenseer, or by having a mother that possessed
recessive versions of those genes, are these abilities passed on to younger generations. Since
Craster is the father figure, and he only mates with those of his own gene pool, his own
daughters, there's no danger of accidentally giving the Walkers or, possibly, the Children what
they're really after, and that's human babies with those psychic type genes.
(If you're interested in learning more about the genetics of Game of Thrones, I suggest checking
out Preston Jacobs on Youtube and watching his excellent series "The Genetics of Dragons
and War")
So that's Robert's Rebellion, and The Long Night, two of the central conflicts of our story and
they're both based on lies and/or lost information. I believe the North was supposed to
remember, I believe that's the genesis of the unofficial words of the North: The North
Remembers. In this case, the North did not remember and now a price will have to be paid for
that forgetfulness. This brings us to what I believe is the final and biggest lie of a Song of Ice
and Fire, the Iron Throne itself. In order to explain why the Iron Throne itself is probably the
biggest lie of the series, we need to take a step back and look at the big picture.
What is the big picture of Westeros? Of Planetos itself? This is much more difficult to suss
out, but I have my theories. The first thing to recognize is that we have no clear timeline.
Earlier in the article, I allude to the fact that it may have been 8,000 years since the Long Night.
It may very well have been, it may also have been that less time has passed, we have several
different accounts from several different Maesters of the length of time that passed between the
present day of our story and the Long Night. Some say 3,000 years, others say 5,000 years
and still others think it has been 8,000 years. In my opinion, the longer that has passed
between the present of our story and the long ago Long Night, the more believable it is that the
true history of this world has been lost to the ages. In any case, whether it's 3,000 or 8,000 we
have to ask ourselves the same question, and that is why, after all this time, has Westeros (or
Planetos as a whole for that matter) not progressed?
When Dany speaks of breaking the wheel, I believe that what she's referring you is the wheel
of medieval feudalism that Westeros has been trapped in for possibly 8,000 years. The history
of the World of Ice and Fire is a history of conflict, many long, bitter conflicts that have had the
added effect of stunting the progression of Westerosi society. What have the vast majority of
these wars been fought over? Why over thrones, Iron or otherwise, it's the Game of Thrones in
which you either win or you die, that's holding Westeros back. The Iron Throne has become a
symbol of absolute power, the conflict over who controls this throne, whether overt or covert, is
central to our story. All of the major events that have happened in our story have some
connection to the pursuit of this ugly iron chair. The War of Five Kings, the Red Wedding, the
Purple Wedding, Robert's Rebellion, I could go on and on. I believe that this perpetual state of
conflict is the reason why Westeros has been unable to progress for possibly 8,000 years. For
perspective, our own medieval period lasted roughly 1000 years, from the fall of the Roman
Empire in the 5th century to the rise of the Renaissance in the 15th century.
Davos Seaworth said it best during the last season "when the night comes, it won't matter
whose corpse sits on the Iron Throne." And yet, look at what's happening in our story, again
mankind is divided, and it's divided because of the Iron Throne. Queen Cersei, a firm believer
in the philosophy of you win or you die, refuses to relinquish the throne to Dany, no matter how
much more well suited for the throne she is than Cersei, and once again mankind will suffer for
it. The armies of Westeros will face the White Walkers in the North, but humanity will be divided
and will not win. It's only when humanity fights together that we will triumph and I believe that
final battle will take place in King's Landing. However, I don't believe that King's Landing, or the
Iron Throne will survive this battle. Someone, or possibly some dragon, or perhaps a
combination of both, will light the fuse on the caches of wildfire that the Mad King Aerys had
stashed all over the city. In fact, I believe that the Mad King did this at the behest of either Bran
or Bloodraven, I believe they sent him visions and drove him mad, and when he was saying
"Burn them all!" as he died, he was actually talking about the White Walkers who he had either
seen swarming King's Landing in his visions, or he saw this as he died, courtesy of Bran or
Bloodraven. Remember, Bran is the only human who can penetrate the mind of another human
being and control him, but he's not the only character in our story capable of sending people
visions.
The lie that is the Iron Throne will bring mankind to the brink of extinction. So who will sit the
Iron Throne in the end? Nobody, in my opinion, at least not the current version of the Iron
Throne that we're all so familiar with. There may end up being a symbolic re-imagining of the
Iron Throne, and I believe that if anyone is going to sit in that chair, it's going to be the child of
Dany and Jon, possibly with Tyrion acting as Regent until the boy or girl comes of age.
Westeros as we know it will merge with the lands Dany conquered across the Narrow Sea, and
all of that will most likely become one kingdom or country. There may still be a monarchy, but I
have a feeling that it will be closer to a modern monarchy like Great Britain, a monarch who is
mostly a figurehead supported by a parliament or House of Lords of some sort. A pact may
have to be made with the White Walkers once again, Dany or Jon or both may be involved in
sealing this pact in a way that will prevent them from governing what's left of Westeros at the
end. I believe that Dany will most likely be killed, along with her dragons and either almost all or
all of the White Walkers and the Children will be killed and all of the Weirwood trees will be cut
down.
Martin has repeatedly said that the end of the series will be "bittersweet" So here's the bitter,
as I see it: Dany and her dragons will die, King's Landing and the Iron Throne will be destroyed,
most of the noble houses of Westeros will be in tatters, mankind as a whole will be brought to
the very brink of extinction. Bran may be involved in using his power to influence the minds of
men to forget about magic, dragons, White Walkers and the Children, or it may happen via
different means, the result will be the same. These supernatural forces will be decimated and
forgotten, mankind will no longer hear the voices of the Gods. Many of the characters that we
have come to know and love will die, and ultimately may be as lost to history as the heroes of
old are to today's Westeros.
Here's the sweet: Mankind will survive, the wheel of medieval feudalism will be broken,
mankind will move forward fully in charge of it's own destiny, without the overt influence of
magical beings or Gods. Out of the ashes of the old, a new civilization will rise, one that doesn't
perpetuate endless conflicts and manufacture horrors as a side effect of its politics. Dany and
Jon's child will most likely be the new monarch or whatever you want to call it, with Tyrion acting
as Regent, ruling until the child comes of age.
Some of our characters will live, here's a breakdown of who I think will live and who I think will
probably die before the end:
Danaerys: Dead, along with all of her dragons.
Jon: Dead, or possibly surviving but in a way in which he no longer participates in what
happens going forward...
Sansa: Alive.
Arya: Dead, but not before she finishes her list...
Cersei: Dead, either by Jamie's hand or perhaps Arya wearing Jamie's face...
Jamie: Dead, killed by Brienne or possibly indirectly through some decision of Cersei's...
Brienne: Alive.
Bran: This one is tricky, in the books I believe Bran is getting played by Bloodraven and the
Children, I'm less sure of that fact on the TV show. If he has been getting played on the show,
he has to die, possibly by Arya's hand holding that nifty new Valyrian Steel dagger he gave her
in Season 7, the one that was supposed to take his life back in the first season. He may survive
and be responsible for making mankind forget, or he may die and serve the same purpose
before his death. Not 100% on this one at all. I feel like I need to mention, that since Bran has
been shown to have the ability to influence the past, he may be able to prevent the Walkers
from ever being created at all. Aftwerwards, perhaps there will be ' peace with the remnants of
the Children of the Forest, but that all seems a bit too neat for bittersweet.
Sandor Clegane: Another tough one, on one hand I'd love to see him live having redeemed
himself, but I'm also pretty damn sure Clegane bowl is going to happen and, as tough as he is, I
don't see him beating the undead Mountain by himself. Perhaps Brienne or Arya gives him the
assist he needs to take him down, if not, I think he'll die to the Mountain.
Gregor Clegane: Dead, unlikely but possibly at the hand of his brother alone or more likely, his
brother and others like Arya or Brienne.
Melisandre: Dead, most likely by Arya's hand.
Varys: Also dead, I believe he may be the one to light the fuse on the wildfire underneath King's
Landing, if the dragons don't do it for him. After all, nobody knows the Red Keep's secret
passages better than the Spider. In any case, I believe that even if he doesn't light the fuse,
he'll be caught in the explosion.
Qyburn: So dead, I'd love to see him meet his end at the hands of his creation, Gregor
Clegane, or perhaps at the hands of another of his creations, Cersei Lannister.
Gendry: Alive but shattered by the death of Arya Stark, as his father once was over Lyanna
Stark.
Tyrion: Alive, my guess is as Regent for Jon and Dany's child, but it's only a guess.
Ser Davos Seaworth: Alive, may be involved in raising Jon and Dany's child going forward, for
example him as the Hand to Tyrion's possible regency.
Euron Greyjoy: Dead, either at the hands of Theon, Yara or both.
Theon Greyjoy: Another tough one, Theon has redeemed himself somewhat but I think his
ultimate redemption will come from him sacrficing himself for Yara, so my final answer has to be
dead, but it's possible that he'll make it out.
Yara Greyjoy: Alive
Grey Worm: Alive
Missandei: Alive, another one possibly involved in raising Dany and Jon's child going forward.
Ser Jorah: Dead, defending Daenarys.
Samwell Tarly: Alive, of course, now the head of his house and also I believe he'll be revealed
as the writer/narrator of our story.
Bronn: Dead attempting to secure his fortune from the Lannisters, either defending Jamie or
Cersei possibly. There's some evidence in the books that Bronn is the last Rayne of House
Castamere, but I don't think we're going to get any of that on the show.
Berric Dondarrion: Dead, for good this time, engages the Night King in single combat and is
defeated.
Tormund Giantsbane: Seems to have a knack for survival, I'm going to give this one an Alive.
No, he doesn't get with Brienne.
The Night King: Alive, but forgotten and forced to live out the rest of his days in solitude as the
last of his kind, or, more likely, dead. Possibly killed by Jon, a dragon or perhaps Bran will
travel to the past and stop them from being created in the first place. There's a million different
ways this one can go.
So, that's my take on the end of Game of Thrones, probably the single greatest piece of fantasy
fiction ever written, at least in my opinion. I just want to take the time to point out that I'm
probably wrong on a lot of this stuff, and I hope that I am. I'd be extremely disappointed if
nothing about the final season of GoT surprised me in any way. I think I've gotten fairly close to
what the actual ending will entail, but only time will tell.
George RR Martin has written an amazing series and HBO made an amazing show, never
before have I felt compelled by a TV show to write out what I thought the ending would entail,
that's how much I love this series. In my opinion, he's dethroned Tolkien as the preeminent
fantasy writer of our time. I could write a few more paragraphs kissing his ass and praising this
story but I think George would prefer I kept it short and sweet and I think saying he's better than
Tolkien, the master and inventor of modern fantasy, would be all the praise he needed to hear.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope you enjoy this final season as much as I know
that I will.

This is the end...

  • 1. ***Possible spoilers for the end of Game of Thrones, you have been warned.*** Its all been one big lie... OK, so maybe that's a bit of an oversimplification. Allow me to explain... Last season's finale showed us that Robert's Rebellion was based on a lie, the lie that Rhaegar Targaryen had kidnapped and raped Ned Stark's sister, Lyanna. The truth is: Rhaegar and Lyanna were lovers, in spite of the fact that Rhaegar was already married with children and Lyanna was promised to Robert Barratheon. We learned, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that they weren't just lovers. In fact, they were married in a secret ceremony in Dorne after Rhaegar had his marriage to Elia Martell annulled. Neither of them apparently had the chance to tell anyone else before they met their ends. Rhaegar died facing Robert on the Trident (or so we've been told...) and Lyanna died giving birth to the character we've come to know as Jon Snow. The only reason we know about this marriage taking place is an entry in the journal of the Maester who annulled Rhaegar's marriage. We see the truth of it for ourselves in Bran's vision. We saw the scene at the Tower of Joy, where Lyanna, bleeding to death after a difficult birth, entrusts her son, the literal song of ice and fire, (from the combination of his Stark White Walker blood and his Targaryen blood of the Dragon) the rightful heir to the Iron Throne whose name is Aegon Targaryen, to her brother and Robert Barratheon's best friend, Ned Stark. Lyanna informs Ned of the babies name and the circumstances of his birth, and with her final dying breaths extracts a promise from him. She asks Ned to promise that he will never tell anyone, especially Robert, of the boy's true parentage. Her dying words were, "Promise me, Ned." For someone as duty and honor bound as Ned, this is a terrible promise to have to make, but Ned promises his sister on her deathbed that he will keep her secret. As we know from the show, Ned is a man of his word, and he never reneges on that promise, even when his world crumbles to dust around him and he ultimately loses his head. Imagine how Ned must have felt. After all, he had just found out that almost everything he was fighting for was a lie. His father and brother both died because of this lie. After hearing the news of Rhaegar's kidnapping of his beloved daughter, Ned's father, Rickard, and his elder brother Brandon travelled to King's Landing to confront the Mad King Aerys over the behavior of his son and heir. For his trouble, Rickard Stark was cooked by wildfire in a suit of armor while Brandon was made to watch in horror with a rope tied around his neck. In a vain attempt to reach his father and save him, Brandon ends up strangling himself to death. This is the inciting incident of Robert's Rebellion and the fall of the Targaryen dynasty, and it all happened because none of them knew what really transpired between Rhaegar and Lyanna. The damage doesn't stop there. No, this lie was like a stone thrown into a calm pool of water, the ripples stretched out across the whole of Westeros. Rhaegar lost his life fighting Robert on the Trident, his breastplate caved in by the rebels war hammer, the rubies that were set in his breastplate carried down river, along with his blood. This happens before Ned learns the truth about his sister and Rhaegar Targaryen.
  • 2. Afterwards, Grand Maester Pycelle convinces the Mad King to open the gates of King's Landing to Tywin Lannister and his army, against the advice of Tywin's own son, Jamie. The city gates are opened to the Lannister army and instead of keeping his word, Tywin, never one to play the losing side, betrays the trust of the Mad King. So while Tywin's army sacks the city, he dispatches Gregor Clegane, The Mountain That Rides, and Amory Lorch (who isn't mentioned in the TV show) to the Red Keep with orders to kill the children of Rhaegar and the Mad King, so they can lay their lifeless, infant bodies at the feet of the new king and prove their loyalty beyond question. The Mountain does not find the children of the Mad King in the Red Keep, due to them having been spirited away. However, he does find Rhaegar's son, daughter and also his wife, so Gregor kills Aegon by dashing his head against the wall while his mother watches, and then rapes Elia, while he's covered in the blood of her infant son and then proceeds to crush her skull. In the books, it's Amory Lorch who kills Rhaenys, dragging the screaming infant from under her mother's bed and stabbing her to death. In the TV show, the Red Viper accuses Gregor of having murdered both of Elia's children. In the end, the result is the same, Lord Tywin has the bodies wrapped in Lannister cloaks and lays them before his new king, Robert Barratheon. While Tywin is sacking the city and Gregor is murdering Rhaegar's family, Jamie attends to the Mad King. He begs Aerys to surrender peacefully to Robert Barratheon (who has come with his army to King's Landing fresh from his victory on the Trident) and his father. Instead, Aerys instructs his pyromancer to "Burn them all, burn them in the their homes. Burn them in their beds," and let the traitor be king of the ashes. Jamie learns that Aerys has caches of wildfire stored all around the city, underground. Under all the major buildings and thoroughfares, the Sept of Baelor (we've seen the results of that in the show...) the slums of Flea Bottom, even the Red Keep itself. It's more than enough wildfire to level the city and kill the entire population of King's Landing, including everyone in the Red Keep, in one fell swoop. (More on this later...) Before allowing this to happen, Jamie kills the king's pyromancer and then drives his sword into the back of the Mad King as he tries to flee. Jamie explains what actually took place while he's in the tubs beneath Harrenhall with Brienne: "Burn them all," he kept saying. "Burn them all." "I don't think he expected to die. He- he meant to... burn with the rest of us and rise again, reborn as a dragon to turn his enemies to ash. I slit his throat to make sure that didn't happen. That's where Ned Stark found me." And, tragically, what is probably the single most honorable thing that comes out of the entire fall of the Targaryen dynasty, the saving of all of those innocent lives, brands Jamie as the most dishonorable man in the realm in the eyes of almost everyone. Kingslayer, Oathbreaker, Man Without Honor. Once again, because nobody knows the truth. This is one of our author's themes, lies and the consequences of these lies, how they effect everyone around them, poisoning everything that they touch. The story of Robert's Rebellion is not the only lie in our story, there is another, even bigger lie that I believe we're going to discover in this next season, the lie of The Long Night, the Battle for the Dawn and the prophecy of Azor Ahai. I don't believe that the last battle with the White
  • 3. Walkers actually happened as we've been told, there was no glorious last hero who single- handedly led the fight against the darkness. I believe it ended with a pact, and the terms of this pact were actively being fulfilled, up until about roughly 200 years ago. The arrival of Good Queen Alysanne to the North, and the ending of the lords right to the first night ended what I believe may have been practiced in the North for nigh on 8,000 years. The offering of bastard infant children, unwanted products of the lords right to the first night, to the White Walkers. Sacrificing to the Others, as it's described in the books. I believe this was carried out by the brothers of the Night's Watch, and the ending of this practice, by all but Craster (up until his death), is what led to the White Walkers return. We've seen in our story that Craster, as disgusting a monster as he was, was able to successfully placate the White Walkers by giving them his infant sons. We've also seen that the White Walkers reproduce by turning infant humans into White Walkers, which tells me that they cannot reproduce on their own. I don't believe this to have always been the case, but I also believe that these are the proverbial Old Gods, and they are very old. So old, in fact, that they have degenerated to the point where they cannot reproduce themselves without using a human baby. There's a reason we've never seen a female White Walker, they do not exist anymore. They may have once, but I believe this is no longer the case. So, ultimately, the White Walkers are no more evil than we are, they are simply trying to survive, any way they can, and cannot do so without the help of humans. This may also be the case with the Chlidren of the Forest, this may be the reason that we've only seen female Children. They may also be unable to reproduce on their own, and in our TV show they may also now be extinct for all we know, I believe we'll find out more about that this season. I am less sure of the premise that the Children cannot reproduce on their own, or that if it's true it even matters anymore, given they may now be extinct. I am fairly certain that it is the case with the White Walkers. You may be asking why I indicted the brother's of the Night's Watch in this conspiracy to give unwanted human infants to the White Walkers. The answer lies at the Nightfort, it's a giant gate with the face of a weirwood. It's called the Black Gate, and I believe it may have been used for thousands of years to sacrifice bastard children to the Old Gods. This gate is only opened by the reciting of the Night's Watch vows, by a sworn brother of the Night's Watch, and this was part of that organizations true purpose. We see Samwell Tarly utilize this gate to get Bran, Meera, Jojen and Hodor beyond the wall in the TV show. The men of the Night's Watch really were the guardians against the return of the Night, but not in the way we might have originally thought. When Good Queen Alysanne ends the lords right to the first night, I believe that also ended the giving of unwanted, bastard infants, products of that despicable practice, to the Others. In fact, I believe that Craster may have been set up beyond the wall (remember, Craster's father was supposedly a member of the Night's Watch) in order to keep the Walkers at bay by giving them children, and also in order to weaken the White Walkers genetically, by giving them
  • 4. only male children who were the products of incest. Although our story takes place in an obviously patriarchal society, the irony is that the genes that give people special abilities- greensight, warging and dragon riding, all come from the matriarchal side of the gene pool. The mother's genes are what's important, only by having a mother who was a dragon rider, or warg or greenseer, or by having a mother that possessed recessive versions of those genes, are these abilities passed on to younger generations. Since Craster is the father figure, and he only mates with those of his own gene pool, his own daughters, there's no danger of accidentally giving the Walkers or, possibly, the Children what they're really after, and that's human babies with those psychic type genes. (If you're interested in learning more about the genetics of Game of Thrones, I suggest checking out Preston Jacobs on Youtube and watching his excellent series "The Genetics of Dragons and War") So that's Robert's Rebellion, and The Long Night, two of the central conflicts of our story and they're both based on lies and/or lost information. I believe the North was supposed to remember, I believe that's the genesis of the unofficial words of the North: The North Remembers. In this case, the North did not remember and now a price will have to be paid for that forgetfulness. This brings us to what I believe is the final and biggest lie of a Song of Ice and Fire, the Iron Throne itself. In order to explain why the Iron Throne itself is probably the biggest lie of the series, we need to take a step back and look at the big picture. What is the big picture of Westeros? Of Planetos itself? This is much more difficult to suss out, but I have my theories. The first thing to recognize is that we have no clear timeline. Earlier in the article, I allude to the fact that it may have been 8,000 years since the Long Night. It may very well have been, it may also have been that less time has passed, we have several different accounts from several different Maesters of the length of time that passed between the present day of our story and the Long Night. Some say 3,000 years, others say 5,000 years and still others think it has been 8,000 years. In my opinion, the longer that has passed between the present of our story and the long ago Long Night, the more believable it is that the true history of this world has been lost to the ages. In any case, whether it's 3,000 or 8,000 we have to ask ourselves the same question, and that is why, after all this time, has Westeros (or Planetos as a whole for that matter) not progressed? When Dany speaks of breaking the wheel, I believe that what she's referring you is the wheel of medieval feudalism that Westeros has been trapped in for possibly 8,000 years. The history of the World of Ice and Fire is a history of conflict, many long, bitter conflicts that have had the added effect of stunting the progression of Westerosi society. What have the vast majority of these wars been fought over? Why over thrones, Iron or otherwise, it's the Game of Thrones in which you either win or you die, that's holding Westeros back. The Iron Throne has become a symbol of absolute power, the conflict over who controls this throne, whether overt or covert, is central to our story. All of the major events that have happened in our story have some connection to the pursuit of this ugly iron chair. The War of Five Kings, the Red Wedding, the
  • 5. Purple Wedding, Robert's Rebellion, I could go on and on. I believe that this perpetual state of conflict is the reason why Westeros has been unable to progress for possibly 8,000 years. For perspective, our own medieval period lasted roughly 1000 years, from the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century to the rise of the Renaissance in the 15th century. Davos Seaworth said it best during the last season "when the night comes, it won't matter whose corpse sits on the Iron Throne." And yet, look at what's happening in our story, again mankind is divided, and it's divided because of the Iron Throne. Queen Cersei, a firm believer in the philosophy of you win or you die, refuses to relinquish the throne to Dany, no matter how much more well suited for the throne she is than Cersei, and once again mankind will suffer for it. The armies of Westeros will face the White Walkers in the North, but humanity will be divided and will not win. It's only when humanity fights together that we will triumph and I believe that final battle will take place in King's Landing. However, I don't believe that King's Landing, or the Iron Throne will survive this battle. Someone, or possibly some dragon, or perhaps a combination of both, will light the fuse on the caches of wildfire that the Mad King Aerys had stashed all over the city. In fact, I believe that the Mad King did this at the behest of either Bran or Bloodraven, I believe they sent him visions and drove him mad, and when he was saying "Burn them all!" as he died, he was actually talking about the White Walkers who he had either seen swarming King's Landing in his visions, or he saw this as he died, courtesy of Bran or Bloodraven. Remember, Bran is the only human who can penetrate the mind of another human being and control him, but he's not the only character in our story capable of sending people visions. The lie that is the Iron Throne will bring mankind to the brink of extinction. So who will sit the Iron Throne in the end? Nobody, in my opinion, at least not the current version of the Iron Throne that we're all so familiar with. There may end up being a symbolic re-imagining of the Iron Throne, and I believe that if anyone is going to sit in that chair, it's going to be the child of Dany and Jon, possibly with Tyrion acting as Regent until the boy or girl comes of age. Westeros as we know it will merge with the lands Dany conquered across the Narrow Sea, and all of that will most likely become one kingdom or country. There may still be a monarchy, but I have a feeling that it will be closer to a modern monarchy like Great Britain, a monarch who is mostly a figurehead supported by a parliament or House of Lords of some sort. A pact may have to be made with the White Walkers once again, Dany or Jon or both may be involved in sealing this pact in a way that will prevent them from governing what's left of Westeros at the end. I believe that Dany will most likely be killed, along with her dragons and either almost all or all of the White Walkers and the Children will be killed and all of the Weirwood trees will be cut down. Martin has repeatedly said that the end of the series will be "bittersweet" So here's the bitter, as I see it: Dany and her dragons will die, King's Landing and the Iron Throne will be destroyed, most of the noble houses of Westeros will be in tatters, mankind as a whole will be brought to the very brink of extinction. Bran may be involved in using his power to influence the minds of men to forget about magic, dragons, White Walkers and the Children, or it may happen via different means, the result will be the same. These supernatural forces will be decimated and
  • 6. forgotten, mankind will no longer hear the voices of the Gods. Many of the characters that we have come to know and love will die, and ultimately may be as lost to history as the heroes of old are to today's Westeros. Here's the sweet: Mankind will survive, the wheel of medieval feudalism will be broken, mankind will move forward fully in charge of it's own destiny, without the overt influence of magical beings or Gods. Out of the ashes of the old, a new civilization will rise, one that doesn't perpetuate endless conflicts and manufacture horrors as a side effect of its politics. Dany and Jon's child will most likely be the new monarch or whatever you want to call it, with Tyrion acting as Regent, ruling until the child comes of age. Some of our characters will live, here's a breakdown of who I think will live and who I think will probably die before the end: Danaerys: Dead, along with all of her dragons. Jon: Dead, or possibly surviving but in a way in which he no longer participates in what happens going forward... Bran: This one is tricky, in the books I believe Bran is getting played by Bloodraven and the Children, I'm less sure of that fact on the TV show. If he has been getting played on the show, he has to die, possibly by Arya's hand holding that nifty new Valyrian Steel dagger he gave her in Season 7, the one that was supposed to take his life back in the first season. He may survive and be responsible for making mankind forget, or he may die and serve the same purpose before his death. Not 100% on this one at all. I feel like I need to mention, that since Bran has been shown to have the ability to influence the past, he may be able to prevent the Walkers from ever being created at all. Aftwerwards, perhaps there will be ' peace with the remnants of the Children of the Forest, but that all seems a bit too neat for bittersweet. Sandor Clegane: Another tough one, on one hand I'd love to see him live having redeemed himself, but I'm also pretty damn sure Clegane bowl is going to happen and, as tough as he is, I don't see him beating the undead Mountain by himself. Perhaps Brienne or Arya gives him the assist he needs to take him down, if not, I think he'll die to the Mountain.
  • 7. Gregor Clegane: Dead, unlikely but possibly at the hand of his brother alone or more likely, his brother and others like Arya or Brienne. Melisandre: Dead, most likely by Arya's hand. Varys: Also dead, I believe he may be the one to light the fuse on the wildfire underneath King's Landing, if the dragons don't do it for him. After all, nobody knows the Red Keep's secret passages better than the Spider. In any case, I believe that even if he doesn't light the fuse, he'll be caught in the explosion. Qyburn: So dead, I'd love to see him meet his end at the hands of his creation, Gregor Clegane, or perhaps at the hands of another of his creations, Cersei Lannister. Gendry: Alive but shattered by the death of Arya Stark, as his father once was over Lyanna Stark. Tyrion: Alive, my guess is as Regent for Jon and Dany's child, but it's only a guess. Ser Davos Seaworth: Alive, may be involved in raising Jon and Dany's child going forward, for example him as the Hand to Tyrion's possible regency. Euron Greyjoy: Dead, either at the hands of Theon, Yara or both. Theon Greyjoy: Another tough one, Theon has redeemed himself somewhat but I think his ultimate redemption will come from him sacrficing himself for Yara, so my final answer has to be dead, but it's possible that he'll make it out. Yara Greyjoy: Alive Grey Worm: Alive Missandei: Alive, another one possibly involved in raising Dany and Jon's child going forward. Ser Jorah: Dead, defending Daenarys. Samwell Tarly: Alive, of course, now the head of his house and also I believe he'll be revealed as the writer/narrator of our story. Bronn: Dead attempting to secure his fortune from the Lannisters, either defending Jamie or Cersei possibly. There's some evidence in the books that Bronn is the last Rayne of House Castamere, but I don't think we're going to get any of that on the show. Berric Dondarrion: Dead, for good this time, engages the Night King in single combat and is defeated.
  • 8. Tormund Giantsbane: Seems to have a knack for survival, I'm going to give this one an Alive. No, he doesn't get with Brienne. The Night King: Alive, but forgotten and forced to live out the rest of his days in solitude as the last of his kind, or, more likely, dead. Possibly killed by Jon, a dragon or perhaps Bran will travel to the past and stop them from being created in the first place. There's a million different ways this one can go. So, that's my take on the end of Game of Thrones, probably the single greatest piece of fantasy fiction ever written, at least in my opinion. I just want to take the time to point out that I'm probably wrong on a lot of this stuff, and I hope that I am. I'd be extremely disappointed if nothing about the final season of GoT surprised me in any way. I think I've gotten fairly close to what the actual ending will entail, but only time will tell. George RR Martin has written an amazing series and HBO made an amazing show, never before have I felt compelled by a TV show to write out what I thought the ending would entail, that's how much I love this series. In my opinion, he's dethroned Tolkien as the preeminent fantasy writer of our time. I could write a few more paragraphs kissing his ass and praising this story but I think George would prefer I kept it short and sweet and I think saying he's better than Tolkien, the master and inventor of modern fantasy, would be all the praise he needed to hear. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope you enjoy this final season as much as I know that I will.
