1. September 15, 2014, San Marcos, CA—The Cardinal Newman Society
recognized St. Joseph Academy High School in San Marcos as a 2014 School of
Excellence. Honor Roll schools receiving this designation are marked by the
integration of Catholic identity throughout all aspects of their programs and excellence in academics.
Principal Tony Biese said, “We have been nationally recognized for providing authentic Catholic
education of the highest quality. Our unwavering commitment to the Faith is well known, but we also
excel academically, which is partially indicated by our very high standardized test scores. What an
honor, especially as we celebrate our 20th year!”
Dr. George Delgado stated, “I am delighted and proud to learn of this latest award granted
to St. Joseph Academy. S.J.A. is managing to provide the right combination of a strong Catholic
formation, a rigorous classical curriculum and enriching sports and extracurricular activities. Where
faith and reason meet, there you will find the Catholic Church and St. Joseph Academy.” Dr. Delgado
is medical director of Culture of Life Family Services, and father of four children, all of whom are
graduates of St. Joseph Academy High School.
“As a Board member and as a parent of a 2009 graduate of St. Joseph’s, I am very proud that
the Cardinal Newman Society has recognized the strong Catholic identity and academic excellence
of St. Joseph Academy High School,” said Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, founder and president of the
Ruth Institute.
This year, seventy-one schools received the honor of being named as a School of
Excellence, and an additional nine received the distinction of Honorable Mention. This is less than five
percent of the Catholic high schools in the United States.
“Since competition began in 2004, the Honor Roll has been a helpful tool for administrators,
families, and benefactors in recognizing the quality of a Catholic high school education,” said Patrick J.
Reilly, President of the Cardinal Newman Society. “The Honor Roll schools are a reminder that
Catholic education is getting better every day—not only academically, but in the renewal of Catholic
identity.”
St. Joseph Academy is San Diego County’s only K-12 school that teaches the Catholic Faith.
Faithfulness to the Magisterium, an S.A.T. average of 1720, traditional Catholic values, and C.I.F. sports
are all part of forming our high school students as leaders of tomorrow. For more information, visit

MRS. GRACE DULANEY SPEAKS TO HS ABOUT THE LAMB OF GOD MATERNITY HOME
SJA SUPPORTS THE CULTURE OF LIFE THROUGH “CRUSADERS FOR LIFE” CLUB
On October 2nd, Dr. George Delgado, medical director of COLFS (Culture of Life Family Services) and SJA Board of Directors member, gave a bio-ethics talk on the principle of double effect to the Senior Morality and Apologetics class. During the interesting and informative class, students looked at case studies, and Dr. Delgado challenged them to see how the principle would apply to each one. The students’ ability to understand and apply this difficult concept was remarkable! Thank you, Dr. Delgado, for your unwavering commitment to life. On Thursday, November 13, Mrs. Grace Dulaney, foundress, CEO and President of the Agnus Dei Foundation, spoke to the high school students about open adoption as a pro-life solution to unplanned pregnancy and shared with them her own powerful story. She elucidated the mission and vision of the Agnus Dei Foundation which supports the culture of life by offering counseling, mentorship and life skills, as well as a safe place, food, and room and board for single mothers of unplanned pregnancies. The Agnus Dei Foundation boasts 15 babies who have been successfully born and placed with adoptive couples. “Part of being pro-life is being pro- adoption,” she told the students and encouraged them to help out in as much as they are able. SJA has proudly sponsored a room in the beautiful Lamb of God Maternity Home in Escondido. For more information, visit their website at: www.agnusdeifoundation.org. Thank you, Mrs. Dulaney, for your testimony and prayers! Be assured of ours!

3. Looking back to the summer of 1999, I clearly see God’s hand in bringing me to St. Joseph Academy. My brother worked at the school, and we met up that summer in Colorado. St. Joseph Academy was looking for a teacher, and my brother asked me to consider it. As I contemplated this option with hours of prayer and thought, a friend of mine said, “Hey, you can do anything for a year. Give it a try.” I did. As it turns out, I enjoy teaching. Now, you have to realize that when I graduated I knew two things for certain: I did not want to be a teacher, and I did not want to live in California. God does have a sense of humor.
Now, in my 16th year of teaching, I feel like I fully understand what I learned during my first year: that we are not just teaching students, but also forming souls. This school has a higher purpose than just educating the young. We are preparing them to be saints, to have a moral backbone, and to help them on their journey to heaven. This is what makes our school unique. We stand firmly on the foundation of the Church and will not be shaken by the winds of the world. What inspires me the most about this school are the faculty and staff. They are Godly people who understand the necessity to frequent the Sacraments. They preach the Gospel by how they live, always striving to do God’s will. I cannot imagine a better group of people to prepare the students for the world that awaits them.

Prayer to Our Patron,
St. Joseph
O Saint Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the Throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires. O Saint Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession and obtain for me from your Divine Son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ, Our Lord; so that having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O Saint Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms. I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine Head for me, and ask Him to return the Kiss when I draw my dying breath. Saint Joseph, Patron of departing souls, pray for me. Amen.

Saint Joseph Academy...Where Catholic Tradition Lives On!
As a young person, I was always a follower rather than a leader, comfortable staying within safe boundaries and reluctant to try anything new. However, after 2 years at a liberal private high school, I was frustrated and felt alone in my adherence to the Catholic faith that my parents had instilled in me. When I decided to switch schools and attend SJA, which only went up to 10th grade, I was the only 11th grader and the very first graduate the next year. My time there was critical in my spiritual development, and it planted within me the desire to pursue goodness, beauty and truth. The instruction and guidance I received at the hands of my teachers helped prepare me for the intense classical curriculum I went on to pursue at Thomas Aquinas College.
Now, 15 years later, I am a wife and mother of 5 children. We live in St. Paul, MN, and I work online part-time for Catholic Answers, assisting in their noble endeavors to spread knowledge of Catholicism. I am so thankful that SJA provided that crucial turning point in my academic life, setting my feet on a path directed towards the highest Truth of all.
