The mission of Garnet
& Gold Key is to
recognize members of
the Florida State
University for their
outstanding
contributions in the
areas of leadership,
service, spirit, and
scholastics; and to
promote those
activities, which foster
further progress in
these areas.
Dear Members, Alumni, and Faculty,
After 91 years of loyalty to this great institution, we have decided to play a more external role as
an organization. As we move in this direction, we would like to share our triumphs and initiatives
with you, our beloved members, highly esteemed alumni, and Florida State faculty, in our very
first newsletter. We hope that this new tradition will better help achieve our purpose of uniting
diverse areas of campus in order to work toward furthering the Florida State University as a
leading institution of higher education. We invite you to share in this celebration of traditions and
our endeavor for progress.

Fall Awards Reception
Garnet & Gold Key kicked off the 2015-2016 academic
year with our bi-annual awards reception. Leaders from all
areas of campus and prospective members were invited to
attend the event to network and learn about the history of
our organization. As the evening closed, we recognized
four outstanding students with awards based on Florida
State’s three torches representing strength, skill, and
character. Awards given were Vires, Artes, and Mores,
and True Seminole. Recipients included a FSU Men’s
Tennis player, a member of the FSU Swim team who
works as a research assistant in a nuclear physics lab, the
Chairman of the Florida State Student Foundation Board
of Trustees, and the Executive Director of FSU’s Dance
Marathon philanthropy. We were proud to welcome our
member, Roberto Aguayo, who is Florida State football’s
kicker and winner of the 2013 Lou Groza Award, to speak
about his experiences with leadership on and off the field.

Initiation & Torch Night
We had the honor of initiating 30 incredible campus leaders into our Fall 2015 class. Membership
was awarded to outstanding individuals who represent diverse areas of campus. Prior to initiation,
our Vice President of Development executed a membership workshop that prompted the potential
members to work together to learn the importance of knowledge from different view points as well
as brainstorm solutions to challenges on campus in order to foster progress for the university.
The top 100 incoming freshmen students to Florida State were recognized for their outstanding
academic, extracurricular, and community involvement in high school at our annual Torch Night
ceremony. We look forward to the future successes of these talented and exceptional individuals.
Ross Oglesby Award
Each year since 1973, Garnet & Gold Key has honored one faculty or staff member with what is
known by many as FSU’s “best kept secret,” the Ross Oglesby Award. Having served the Florida
State University for 19 years as Dean of Students and Professor of
Government, Ross Oglesby’s example became the basis of our
selection. We honor a faculty or staff member who exemplifies
high integrity, commitment to students, service to the university,
scholastic excellence, and who has served the FSU community for
at least 10 years.
We are proud to announce Dr. Schlenoff as our 2015 recipient,
and we look forward to his continued loyalty to FSU. During his
28 years, Dr. Schlenoff has served as a professor in Chemistry
and Biochemistry and has served as a Mandelkern Professor of
Polymer Science and the co-founder of the Chempreneurs
program at FSU. His goal is to understand characteristics of
polymers and discover real-world applications through
research. Dr. Schlenoff is described as “a thought-leader not only
at Florida State, but in the world."
A Tribute to Dr. William Woodyard
Thank you to our loyal advisor, Dr. William Woodyard, for
giving our organization and its members constant love and
support over many years. GGK member and Panhellenic
President Ashleigh Gregoria reflects, “You have influenced the
lives of your students in and out of the classroom, and you will
be greatly missed by all of FSU!” The unconquered spirit and
legacy of Dr. Woodyard will forever remain in our hearts.
Our values:
Vires – Strength of all
kinds: physical, moral
and intellectual
Artes – Knowledge;
That which we acquire
knowledge which
transcends skills and
embraces appreciation
of beauty
Mores – Customs;
That build character
and tradition
Member Spotlight: Derrick Scott II
We are proud to announce that one of our members was recently
crowned as the 2015 Homecoming Chief! Derrick is an exemplary
campus leader and representative of Garnet & Gold Key. He has
succeeded not only by being the first in his family to graduate high
school, but also by serving as a senator, Pro Tempore, and a
member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. On campus, you will
always find Derrick radiating Seminole pride with a smile.
