This document describes the movement of ions across a cell membrane at rest. Sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and chloride ions are present on both sides of the membrane, with different concentrations inside and outside the cell. Protein pumps and channels regulate the specific passage of ions through the membrane to maintain different intracellular and extracellular ion concentrations.
