1. Things I Carry: My Jump Rope (Skipping Rope)
In preparing for my business trips my first consideration is my security which includes physical security
and health. My physical fitness is a key component of my health. If I am unhealthy or if I get sick on an
overseas assignment my physical security will be compromised and thus making me vulnerable to
threats such as kidnapping, violent crimes and terrorism. Consequently when I am preparing for my
business trips the first things I pack are my jump rope, running shoes, gym wear and my first aid kit.
In my preparation I usually review security briefings on my intended destination as well as health
warnings. There are several sources to check this type of information for example the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs website, Health Canada, the US CDC website, UN and the CIA website. I also check my
immunization card to ensure that my vaccines are up to date and that I am inoculated against diseases
that may be common in my intended destination.
I check on the culture and common customs in the country I am preparing to travel to for my business
trip. I am a firm believer in showing respect to culture and common customs in other countries as this
can go a far way in aid building friendship and aiding security.
Why is my jump rope important? I find physical activities as one of the best forms of avoiding home
sickness on business trips. If there are no gym facilities I can use my jump rope in my room to get in my
exercise. In countries that are relatively safe I will go for a walk or run. In risk countries I tend my not
venture too far from where I am staying. If I dine out, I do so only with people I know and never with
strangers. I try to avoid common food that can lead to food poisoning or travel sickness. I avoid large
crowds. In some countries I avoid posting pictures on Facebook, Twitter and other social media until I
am safely back home.
My jump rope, running shoes and gym wear and my first aid kit are the things I carry. Security is always
top priority when I travel.
