IFSC codes are primarily a unique 
identification code defining each 
bank branch that helps in 
coordination and successful 
transfer of funds between the 
sender and recipient bank.
IFSC code and MICR Code
IFSC Code 
 IFSC Code is a series of Eleven 
character code. 
The first four characters are always 
alphabetic and correspond to the name 
of the bank. 
The fifth character is reserved for future 
use and is always numeric zero as of 
now. 
The last six characters can be a 
combination of numeric and alphabets 
and correspond to the exact bank branch 
concerned.
Example of IFSC 
Code IFSC code for State Bank of India 
located in Sector 17 in Chandigarh 
City.
The IFSC code for the bank is 
SBIN0000628. 
First 4 characters are SBIN representing 
the name of the bank. 
The last six characters are 000628 which 
correspond to the Sector 17 branch of the 
SBI in Chandigarh. 
The fifth character from the front is o and 
reserved for future use.
